Last weekend we hosted the annual Dust Devil Dash where pilots gather at Mountain Valley Airport and compete to take the honors for the pilot who flew the furthest (handicapped) distance on the 1st Saturday after Labor day weekend. Due to the excellent soaring conditions regularly present in the mountains in our area, most of our pilots fly deep into the Sierra, often into Nevada, and come back to the home field sharing tall tales, a beer and often dinner or a BBQ (in non-cov...id days) with fellow pilots. But on this weekend, the idea is to go as far away as possible, while being chased by your crew in a car, hopefully with a good working radio and your trailer in tow. In past Dust Devil Dash events, we’ve had pilots go as far as Susanville CA, Burns OR, Burley ID or Twin Falls ID. Conversely, sometimes the weather is such that even leaving the Tehachapi Valley is a challenge. Like every other DDD, this weekend presented unique challenges, with relatively soft, lowish lift in the local area and improving to the north. The smoke from fires to the North and southeast made forecasting the dash somewhat uncertain, and many of the pilots who drive in from northern CA or Arizona decided to sit this one out. Despite these challenges, we had 14 pilots turn out to participate in this long standing (35 years or more) SoCal soaring tradition. Big congrats to Dave Heffel for winning the 2020 DDD in his PIK-20D landing in a crop circle near Benton, CA. 2nd Place goes to Jim Neff in his new LS-6 who landed at Bishop airport, and 3rd place goes to Jim Staniforth and Kathy Fosha flying in Jim’s 2 place Duo Discus, who also landed at Bishop Airport. Regarding Skylark North's current operations: Governor Newsom issued an executive order last week outlining safety procedures and practices for the state of California. A part of that order was the inclusion of 16 sectors of industry that are deemed essential to the nation's infrastructure. Airports and flight schools are among those sectors. In light of this and with the need to honor and service our contracts with the military and aerospace industry Mountain Valley Airport ...and Skylark North Glider Flight School will resume operations this weekend. We want to assure everyone in our community that we do so with the utmost regard for the continued health and safety of everyone involved and the community at large. We are exercising enhanced precautionary measures and will remain in compliance with CDC guidelines. Our staff is limited to "essential" personnel only and of course our on-site cafe, Raven's Nest, remains closed until this crisis has passed.
