ONE YEAR AGO, TODAY....we closed the doors at the Mormon Battalion Center at San Diego for public tours. Within a few weeks, new and exciting doors were opened.... We discovered the world of virtual tours. Our volunteers (aka sister missionaries) have given more than 2,900 tours, to over 34,000 people to 65 countries throughout the world. We have THRIVED these last twelve months as we have given virtual tours, had amazing enrichment trainings, served in Old Town San Diego and at the Mormon Battalion, celebrated all of the holidays and visited historic Battalion sites. As we have served, we have planted, painted, rebuilt, cleaned up, dusted, mopped, sanded, stained, refurbished, fixed, washed, chopped, cleared, clipped, cut, picked up, dug, repaired, improved, cleaned, mowed, raked, scrapped, scrubbed, swept.... We have learned a lot about giving virtual tours and our tours have improved immensely as we have received new equipment. We have given virtual tours to individuals, families and to both small and large groups of hundreds at a time. One of our most unique tours was for a youth conference which was held at a drive-in theater in Idaho. We were on the BIG SCREEN to hundreds of youths and their leaders. When we once again open our doors to the public, we will continue to give virtual tours so we can share this amazing story with those that will never have that opportunity to set foot in beautiful San Diego, California. Come and hear the story of the men, women and children of the Mormon Battalion that marched 2,000 miles from Iowa to San Diego in 1846-1847. Join us for a virtual tour. https://calendly.com/mormonbattalionhs

Today, we celebrate the arrival of the Mormon Battalion - US Army of the West to San Diego, CA. Over 500 men, women and children left Council Bluffs, Iowa as t...hey began their arduous 2,000 mile march. I often think of the 331 men and 4 women who arrived in San Diego 174 years ago after their grueling march. They were a ragged bunch who had been tested to their limits going through harsh desert territory with limited water, food and supplies. Can you imagine going through the southwest US desert without adequate shoes? Often, worn out shoes were replaced with rags or the hides from animals. They simply moved forward and were faithful to their task and honored their commitment to their country and their God. God bless the members of the Mormon Battalion that we might hold them in highest remembrance. Battalion members Edward Bunker and George Deliverance Wilson were two of my direct ancestors and today I honor their service, sacrifice and faith. Sydney Whitby and I love greeting people and introducing them to our friend Levi here! One soldier I have loved learning about is Levi Hancock, who was a talent...ed musician and poet. Even though the soldiers were exhausted, they regularly found time for music and singing before going to sleep. Music helped bolster their spirits enough to help them face the long, hard march the next day. Today in history, August 27, 1846, the Mormon Battalion began camping in Council Grove, Kansas for five days. The battalion's more than 500 volunteers and offic...ers had been recruited from the Mormon pioneers (members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) at Council Bluffs, Iowa, to fight in the war with Mexico. The commanding officer, Colonel James Allen, had died at Ft. Leavenworth because of a lingering illness, and was replaced by Lieutenant Andrew Jackson Smith, who took command in Council Grove on August 30. Smith then led the Mormon Battalion to Santa Fe, about half of the 2,000-mile march to San Diego. Council Grove was a government way-station used by soldiers and traders preparing for travel along the Santa Fe trail. While awaiting the change in command, the Mormon soldiers repaired their wagons and equipment, gathered supplies, and held religious services here. The battalion acquired two cannon drawn by six horses each, a portable blacksmith shop, forty provision wagons, twelve family wagons, and a few private baggage wagons. Merchants in twelve wagons also joined the battalion here for the march to Santa Fe, selling the soldiers clothing, water, and other goods.
