Look at this beautiful photo That little face looking up at his mama like finally, I’m home Whatever your pregnancy journey, that moment... where you first meet your baby has got to be one of the most amazing in the world right? But what about your little one? I think it’s so important to think about your baby’s perspective. Fair warning, I *do* mention this quite a lot, because I feel like we sometimes forget about the baby’s experience of birth! It’s so important to take some time thinking about your birth plan from your baby’s point of view - especially when considering your birth environment and those first few hours after birth. So what sort of things should we be thinking about? Immediate and uninterrupted skin to skin to hear that familiar heartbeat, smell his mum and help regulate his body temperature in this new, colder world as well as ALL of the many other benefits of skin to skin! Dimmed lights to help him adjust from that protected womb world he just came from A fairly quiet environment - your baby wants to hear the voices he recognises from the womb, not random chatter and noise, plus remember their hearing is the most advanced sense at birth! Keep his cord unclamped - suddenly losing 1/3 of his blood circulation isn’t ideal in the first few minutes of life Gentle handling, remember he’s never been picked up or even touched before, plus keep as much of that amazing vernix on his skin as possible! Delaying of things like weighing, and adaptations like vitamin k being given and labels being put on while still on mums chest (if necessary that soon) A towel from home to be nestled over him and his mama with all familiar bacteria on Attention paid to his early feeding cues and early Breastfeeding! Don’t let him get hangry!! Just some ideas to pop in your birth plan - got any more? Pop them below Beautiful photo by Monet Nicole - Birthing Stories Ps - use of ‘him’ isn’t me being sexist, just habit from a mum of a boy! -Reposted from The Village Midwife See more
