Micke Grove Zoo 26.01.2021

FRIDAY FUN Our Turkey Vulture, Clyde, tries not to let the zoo being closed stop him from getting his exercise and keeping busy. He is one of our native species that was injured in the wild and unable to return, so he has made his home at the Micke Grove Zoo. If we provide him with things to kick or walkthrough, he is pretty much always game for some playtime. He is guaranteed to put a smile on our faces. We hope he does the same for you.

Who doesn't enjoy opening a present? Our Golden Lion Tamarin received one of his favorites for Christmas this year. As we prepare to leave 2020, we want to thank you for visiting and caring about our zoo. Due to Covid, we are still closed, but as you can see, we make sure our animals keep busy until they see you again.

Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 stay-at-home order and limited hospital capacity, Micke Grove Zoo and county campgrounds are now closed. Most county parks remain open at this time, but gatherings are still prohibited. We will keep you posted and hope to see you again very soon.

Not sure this photo of our spider monkey needs much explanation on Thanksgiving. We can all relate to needing a nap after a big meal. From all of us at the Micke Grove Zoo, we wish you a very safe and happy Thanksgiving. We are open all week so come on by.

Our Fossa is a perfect example of this strong and beautiful species. They may look like a cat, but this species is most closely related to a mongoose. A very large Mongoose. Found only in Madagascar, they are the top predator. Agile enough to climb trees, and adaptive enough to hunt day or night, they are a powerful carnivore. Of course, our Fossa takes napping pretty seriously too! Thanks to "Clean Earth" he has the perfect napping tunnel. Come out to the Micke Grove Zoo to see him, and remember to wear a mask while you are on the zoo grounds. It not only keeps everyone safe, but it protects animals that can also catch the virus.

When you're this handsome, you take time out of your day to appreciate your own poster. Our Iguana was out on a walk and went right up to his own photo. Come out this weekend and see him and many more animals. We will have a hot dog vendor and on Halloween, there will be volunteer Star Wars characters here to greet you. After Sunday, the zoo will be closed on Mondays and Tuesday for the winter. we will be open Wed-Sun each week from 10-4:30. See you this weekend.

If you guessed skunk, you are correct. Our newest member of the Micke Grove Zoo family is now on exhibit. He came to us from a rehabilitation center in San Diego. He was grabbed by a predator as a baby and most likely dropped. His injuries made it unlikely that he could survive in the wild. He still has many of his wild instincts but doesn't know how to spray and probably would struggle to find food. He is now about 8 months old and settling nicely into his new home.

We are so excited to welcome you back to the zoo tomorrow. We also have a surprise new animal. Here are some clues. He is a native mammal that eats bugs, mice, and, plants. He sleeps by day and hunts by night. He gets along great with cats but, not so much with dogs. Before he has to defend himself, he will try to scare you first by stomping his feet. Any guesses?
