#NationalArmedForcesDay We salute the service men and women in all branches of the United States armed forces who have answered the call to defend our Nation's ...ideals. Oorah! U.S. Marine Corps
#Marines are different. I’ve heard that a lot over the years. One of the reasons for that is the #mcrdcommandmuseum and #mcrdmuseumfoundation M5 program. Part of the recruit training process is to have every Marine, one week prior to graduation, spend time with our #veteran docents as they pass on the history and legacy of our #marinecorps to our newest Marines. This week after a one year and two month layoff due to #covid we were finally able to welcome our docents back in person. Our docents are the life blood that flow through the museum. The knowledge and experiences they each carry with them cannot be replicated in any gallery or exhibit. We are unbelievably fortunate to benefit from their volunteerism and dedication to our Corps. #training #leadership #semperfi #veterans #sandiego #mcrdsandiego #bootcamp

#OTD: 23 October 1983 - At 6:22 am a truck carrying 2,000lbs of explosives drove into the Marine Barracks in Beirut. Three hundred Marines and military service members had been living in the four-story building at the airport in Beirut; 1,800 Marines were stationed at Beirut at the time. Two hundred and twenty Marines and 21 U.S. service personnel were killed by the truck bomb. This bombing was the most deadly attack against U.S. Marines since the World War II battle on Iwo J...ima in February 1945. The bombing in Beirut was traced to Hezbollah, a militant and political group that originated in Lebanon in 1982. Iranian and Syrian involvement was also suspected. In February 1984 United States troops withdrew from Lebanon. Pictured: (1) The explosion of the Marine Corps building in Beirut, Lebanon on October 23, 1983 created a large cloud of smoke that was visible from miles away. Honor the Fallen Join Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. David H. Berger and Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps Troy E. Black as we remember the 220 Marines, 1...8 U.S. Navy Sailors and three U.S. Army Soldiers who died today in 1983 when terrorists attacked the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. #OTD: 20 October 1926 - President Calvin Coolidge again calls upon the Marines to protect the U.S. mail from a resurgence of robberies. Roughly 2,500 Marines were mobilized, primarily from Quantico and posted at distribution sites and transports. These Marines were primarily from the 5th and 10th Regiments. By February of the following year robberies had stopped and Marines were sent to prepare for conflicts in Nicaragua and China.
