Sarah Plummer, Printer at Gemini G.E.L., will be a featured panelist on our online panel discussion on womxn in printmaking this Thursday, May 20 at 5 PM PST. Plummer is a collaborative printer, lately of Australia and more recently of California. She was raised in Sydney and moved to the USA to attend Rhode Island School of Design before completing Tamarind Institute’s Professional Printer Training Program for collaborative lithography. Sarah is captivated by the alchemic expanse of lithography and finds the opportunity to bring well-honored, innovative approaches to artists and their work as one of the greatest pleasures.

Muro spearheads the long-standing Professional Print Program, Barrio Mobile Art Studio (BMAS), and SHG’s multifaceted ...art and education programs. Since joining in 2019, she has curated ateliers and special projects in SHGs renowned serigraph studio established the Artists Committee to guide its monthly Artist Lab series. She also restructured its Artist in Residence program, now called Beyond the Press, inviting multidisciplinary artists to create a body of work with or guided by the SHGs community. As the head of education, she launched a Youth Committee and the Creative Lab partnership with the neighboring high school. She was formerly the Community Engagement Manager at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), developing and executing art programs with community partners and artists in Compton, North Hollywood, and East Los Angeles. Prior to joining the Education team, she had various curatorial roles at LACMA and was Executive Assistant and project manager at USC Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena. She has a B.A. in Art History from Cal State University, Fullerton, and an M.A. in Arts Management from Goucher College in Maryland.

Gaston is the fourth director of Tamarind Institute Previously, she was the lead curator for the Fidelity Investments Corporate Art Collection, based in Boston. Diana has a comprehensive knowle...dge of Tamarind’s vast archives housed at the University of New Mexico Art Museum, where she was curator of prints & photographs from 1989-1993. Subsequently, she held positions as curator at the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego, and associate director of San Francisco Camerawork. She received both her B.A. (1985) and M.A. (1988) in Art History from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas, where she focused on postwar American photography and contemporary works on paper. Her early training included the museum studies program at the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and a NEA internship at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. She has authored numerous catalogue essays, reviews, and articles, most recently contributing the introduction for the monograph Unfolding: The Paper Art and Science of Matthew Shlian.

Trained in architecture and engineering, Gego worked consistently with printmaking in both Venezuela and in the United States, completing numerous etchings, lithographs, and illustrated books throughout her career. A chief concern of Gego’s was the notion of the line and its instability. During her time at Tamarind, first in 1963 and then again in 1966, she experimented with many of the forms and concepts that would reemerge in her later sculptural practice. Ten years ago on this day, opened in La Jolla. featured selections from the sixties and seventies, formative decades in the Museum’s own maturation, as well as a period of artistic ferment in the United States. showcased more than 50 works by notable artists such as Ellsworth Kelly and Agnes Martin, and others who call California their home including Billy Al Bengston, Ed Ruscha, and Alexis Smith. While reflecting different styles, su...ch as minimalism, pop art, and assemblage, the works all reflected the experimental spirit of the period. honored the late Murray A. Gribin (1923-2011), an inspired trustee and patron of the MCASD since the 1970s. A passionate advocate for the arts, Gribin and his wife Ruth settled in California in the 1940s. Together they built a lively collection of recent art from the West Coast.

Art should be something that liberates your soul, provokes the imagination and encourages people to go further.Keith Haring, the American artist whose pop art emerged from the New York City graffiti subculture of the 1980s, was #bornonthisday. In the 1980s, Keith Haring rose to prominence for his paintings and illustrations that address serious political realities while maintaining a sense of joy and playfulness. Haring first gained attention as a street artist, decoratin...g subways and sidewalks throughout New York City. Through his cartoon aesthetic, Haring explored themes of war, drug abuse, and sexuality. But unlike other graffiti artists of the time, Haring didn’t spray paint subway cars or cover up existing imagery. Instead, Haring made chalk drawings on blank advertisement spaces and postered his collages along the platforms. Positioned as marketing material, Haring’s recognizable images were easily legible and fun, yet imbued with his provocative political sensibilities. Early works like highlight the artist’s direct engagement with popular culture. Appropriating a commercial poster of the king of rock and roll, Haring transformed the celebrity into a cartoon-like outline through his signature drawing style of expressive, squiggly lines and allover decoration. The artist’s loose and rapid working style is apparent in the lines of ink dripping down Presley’s face and jacket. Throughout his career, Haring both challenged and capitalized on the fraught relationship between fame, commercialism, and fine art. His use of readily available posters as the foundation for some of his drawings could be seen to abstract or obscure the familiarity of celebrity. At the same time, it suggests a platform for easily disseminating his artwork. Haring made many of these poster pieces, using posters of both Presley and Marilyn Monroe and covering their iconic portraits with his energetic and bold drawings. In 1984, Raúl Guerrero spent six months in Oaxaca, Mexico and surrounding areas, after which he began to use painting as a means of investigating culture and place, producing his Oaxaca series of canvases. In , referencing Palenque in the state of Chiapas, Mexico, a Mayan mask hovers within a lush, idyllic landscape complete with butterflies and a misty waterfall. For many, the borderlands represent a fissurea permeable, flexible, and shifting state where cultures mingle and coexist. As explored in the exhibition , the borderlands belong not only to Chicano/a/x artists but also to all who migrate and live in its affected zones. - by Marcos Ramirez ERRE is a small-scale version of the thirty-three-foot outdoor sculpture that was placed at the San Ysidro Port of Entryone of the busiest borders in the wor...ld and the main passage between San Diego and Tijuana. The artist created a double-headed toy horse to stand in for original sculpture, which stood with one head pointed toward Mexico and the other toward the United States. By referencing the Trojan Horse and Greek mythology, ERRE’s sculpture makes allusions to warperhaps the Mexican-American War (184648) or the violence surrounding the border region today. The film explores the malleability of history and the past, revealing... the borderlands as site that continues to exist in popular imagination.
