The California Department of Education released the 2019 CAASPP scores for ELA and math. While the results show progress in a handful of individual #SanMateoCounty school districts, significant gaps remain, particularly for students of color, those identified as economically disadvantaged, English learners, and students with disabilities. As highlighted by the San Mateo County Office of Education, "the gaps among student groups in the county are wider than the state averages.... The gap in scores between students who are considered economically disadvantaged and all students in the state is 12 percent for both ELA and Mathematics. In San Mateo County, that gap doubles at 25 percent and 27 percent, respectively." SMCSBA is committed to calling attention to these inequities and taking meaningful action. Thank you Governor Gavin Newsom for hearing the concerns of public school districts throughout the state and proposing $3 billion in relief to the CalSTRS system. This proposal is a positive step in helping schools address limited funding in the face of a crippling increase in pension liabilities. We look forward to continuing the conversation on how to secure #fullandfairfunding

SMCSBA is pleased to announce the 16 recipients of the 2018 Kent Awards. This year’s honorees include programs that focus on literacy, computer science, equity and access, social-emotional learning, and pathways to college and career. The San Mateo County Office of Education will also award the first-ever Equity and Excellence in Education Award to one outstanding group of educators. The Kent Awards ceremony will be held on Friday, May 18, at the Crowne Plaza Foster City....
