Looking for something a little different for this summer vacation? When I was growing up in Western Pennsylvania lots of my neighbors went to Chautauqua (which is different from Lake Chautauqua). It’s a precursor to those all inclusive resorts but it has activities that are mentally stimulating. It’s still happening and, according to a friend who went last summer, it’s still doing things the same way. a nice break from the ordinary.

There was a time in the early 20th century when most wealthy San Francisco Jews rented their houses in the city but owned houses on the Peninsula. (In the Hellm...ans' case, it was in Oakland). One of the grandest was Green Gables near Woodside, owned by the Fleischhackers. Built in 1909, it stretches over 74 acres on the Peninsula. It is now for sale and this article says it could fetch $140m. It is a spectacular piece of property with terraced lawns, a gorgeous home designed by Charles Greene, and such history.
