Got some puppy Labrador love today during a pet sitting visit!

We’re really taking some heat on YouTube, where Inertia is still about 6 months old, because many people are under the impression that every dog should be perfe...ctly trained at 6 months of age. Well, in real life Inertia is 9 months old now, and I can’t tell you how proud I am of how far she’s come in the last several weeks. Today we did a training session at our local pet-friendly hardware store. As you know, changing a dog’s environment is the single greatest thing you can do to make it harder for them to focus. My personal dog-raising philosophy is to make sure that I allow for an abundance of experiences for my dog, before insisting on highly disciplined obedience and tricks during those life experiences in the same way that you might introduce a toddler to the world and let them take it all in before asking them to recite their ABC’s. Letting your dog see the world before you start asking them to do things, and not picking every battle as they say, can be really counterintuitive for many people. But I believe our training sessions (like this one from earlier today) are going so smoothly right now because of the strong foundation we’ve laid of giving Inertia ample time to take in the world at her own pace first. When you’re watching our YouTube series now and over the next several episodes, you’ll see what has so far been Inertia’s MOST challenging period in her training. We were really going through it at around 6-7 months, and I’m so excited for you to see her blossom over the next couple of months. Struggling when training your dog over the first year is a NORMAL part of having a dog. Dogs don’t learn in a linear manner, and taking a step back is sometimes necessary in order to eventually take two forward.
