From our health, homes, and our entire community’s economic stability, the COVID-19 pandemic has put us all at risk, especially low-income families and people of color. Now, as vaccines roll out and activities resume, how can we ensure everyone is provided stability in a changed society and economy? Join us on May 13 for a critical conversation about how we place #equity at the center of our community’s actions and decisions around COVID-19 recovery. #AHM2021 Register: http://bit.ly/LFAHM2021

HOUSING IS A HUMAN RIGHT AND SAVES LIVES! HUD announced today that trans and gender non-conforming people will have equal access to shelters. We wrote a public comment last year supporting the Equal Access Rule and we're thrilled to see it's here to stay.
George Floyd should be alive today. We know that his death was preventable. The jury’s decision to hold former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin accountable for Floyd’s murder will hopefully send a message to law enforcement everywhere that police violence is intolerable and inhumane. The movement to end police violence does not end today. The Law Foundation stands with Black Lives Matter in calling for federal legislation that would have prevented George Floyd’s dea...th and protected others who have been either killed, hurt, or traumatized by police violence. "The Trump administration’s expansion of the public charge rule a move that sought to disqualify immigrants who used social programs like Medicaid from obtaining legal residency in the U.S. led to widespread disenrollment from these programs and left scores of children in California without access to health care in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic." http://ow.ly/qoUC50ElUlN

Google is coming to San José, and our already underresourced communitiesparticularly people of color and womenwill disproportionately bear the impact of this project. Let the City know that the Plan’s goals must be to prevent the displacement of our neighbors. We need to build and preserve the most affordable homes possible, and provide tenant protection and community services to ensure that every San Josean has a home. A MUST READ about the criminal justice reform needed in Silicon Valley. "San Jose police officers killed 19 people in the last 5 years; the Santa Clara County District Attorney did not prosecute a single one. Our prosecutors still try and punish kids, mostly Black and Brown boys, as adults. They pursue lengthy prison commitments pursuant to Three Strikes laws. They seek inhumane life without the possibility of parole sentences that amount to death by incarceration. Until recently, our DA’s office sought the death penalty. They stubbornly oppose reforms that move toward decarceration, including laws ending the felony murder rule and prohibiting the prosecution of 14- and 15-year-old kids as adults. These practices are out of step with an electorate that has demonstrated a commitment to system reimagination."
The Law Foundation of Silicon Valley is pleased to welcome its new Directing Attorney of Health, Abre’ Conner. Prior to joining the Law Foundation, Abre’ was a staff attorney with the ACLU Foundation of Northern California, where she advocated for the civil rights and liberties of Central Valley and Northern California residents. Welcome, Abre'!
We're so excited to partner with Roza Patterson and Orrick as part of its Racial, Social, and Economic Justice Fellowship! "With a master’s in human rights, Roza brings a strong commitment to pro bono service to Orrick. She has focused on helping victims of domestic violence and unfair eviction and defending clients’ rights under the Criminal Justice Act. At the Law Foundation, she will continue her work on litigation advocacy and eviction defense on behalf of underrepresented individuals and families in Santa Clara County." http://ow.ly/tODX50CVyF8
We join local elected officials and community leaders in repudiating the violent, treasonous acts committed against the U.S. this week by Trump loyalists, and the criminal act of sedition committed by President Trump himself. We expect swift justice and vigorous prosecution in defense of democracy.
Wishing you happy holidays from the Law Foundation team.

Gov. Newsom recently modifying the Domestic Violence Prevention Act so that coercive control is now included in the definition of #domesticviolence a great step for survivors because it acknowledges that violence is not limited to physical harm. #DVAM http://ow.ly/U7Ze50BTBSp
