We are proud to announce a victory for Daija! Daija is a 14 year old student who loves school. Unfortunately, Daija was excluded from attending school for over ...50 days when her school district failed to provide her with consistent nursing support and refused to allow her to attend school without a nurse. On one particularly horrible day, Daija got dressed for school and waited at the bus stop. When the bus arrived, the driver refused to allow her on the bus because there was no nurse. As a result of the District’s actions, Daija missed out on many educational opportunities, both academic and social. Through a combination of administrative due process and a federal lawsuit, Daija can now attend school and will receive compensation for her exclusion! Jeanie is a staff attorney in the Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Practice Group at DRC. Prior to joining DRC, she externed for two years at the Special Education Law Clinic at the Lanterman Regional Center as a law student. She also did Title IX work at UCLA and labor and education law at the California Teachers Association. Jeanie is a Double Bruin and received her BA and JD from UCLA.
