This morning, while making coffee, I was half watching one of the morning news shows out of the corner of one eye. There was a story about a 20 something young American woman who had been tragically killed in the Middle East while engaged in humanitarian work. She was described as "remarkable". I thought to myself, "Yeah, yeah". Everybody who dies is always described as "remarkable". I stopped to think. I have been to far too many funerals in the last few years. I gave the eulogy at my father's 2 years or so ago. All those people were described as "remarkable". AND THEY WERE! Maybe there are more "remarkable" people out there than we realize. Maybe we should take a different look at others and ourselves. We and they might be remarkable, too.

Have you ever noticed that all AARP offers come with a "lifetime guarantee"? BFD! What are they on the hook for- 5 or 6 years tops?!

Laura and her family are going to be in the DC area soon for a wedding. She called Congressman McCarthy's office to get tickets for a tour. While she was on the phone with Congressman McCarthy's aide, George, the congressman stepped into George's office and had George hand him the phone. Laura and the congressman exchanged pleasantries and eventually Laura said, "I am good friends with your friend, Scott Winkler". There was a long pause and then the congressman said, Of course. Scott Winkler. Does he do your yard, too?" Laura said, "You get. Best little hedger in town!" They finished making arrangements for Laura and her family to meet the congressman and take a tour. He and his staff were so gracious. And, by the way, Scott does sprinkler repair, too.

Watching the news this morning, a disturbing thought struck me. How long will it be before some group files a lawsuit to delete the phrase "one nation under God"!from the pledge of allegiance? I have absolutely no doubt that such a suit will be filed in the not too distant future. More importantly, how will the US Supreme Court rule on the issue?

The PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE ends with the phrase "... with liberty and justice for all", and I do believe there is liberty and justice for all. It's just that some folks get more of it than others.

The people of Ferguson, MO have announced that they are going to stage a silent protest tomorrow night. Perhaps, I can save them some time. I staged a silent protest for 23 years and all it got me was 11 years of spousal support payments.

This morning, I watched a large group of immigrants sworn in as American citizens and congratulated by President Obama. Ironically, the very next story on the same news station was the scene yesterday in Marietta,CA where hundreds of illegal aliens were turned away from that town. It struck me, "Isn't one situation like being invited to the party and the other like crashing the party?

The other day, Laura wanted to trade cars with me so that she could use my SUV to move some large items. The first time I got into her car and turned on the radio, it was tuned to a country station. I think it's rude to change the radio station in someone else's car. So I did the gentlemanly thing and punctured both of my ear drums. A friend of mine told me that he thought that was a little drastic. At least, I think that's what he said.

Happy Birthday, HENRY MARQUEZ!!! I always say, "Gee, when I get to be Henry's age, I hope I look as good as he does". Of course, that's the same thing Methuselah said about Henry.
