Hello LRT Family: We will discuss the press conference that was held on SB 309 (with a view of the presentation by student Melanie Andreo) and our follow-up on this bill; the upcoming Cesar Chavez breakfast and the students who are receiving the scholarships; the passage of the Dream and Promise Act by the House of Representatives and what it will mean for some of our immigrant parents and students (the bill provides a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers and DACA recipients, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) recipients, and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) recipients. Hello LRT Family, CA Proposition 16 would repeal Proposition 209, passed in 1996, that states that discrimination and preferential treatment were prohibited in public employment, public education, and public contracting on account of a person's race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin. Without Prop 209, the state and local governments, public universities, and other political and public subdivisions within limits of federal law would be allowed to develop and use a...ffirmative action programs that grant preferences based on race, sex, color, ethnicity, and national origin in public employment, education, and contracting. Courts have ruled that strict racial quotas and racial point systems in higher education are deemed unconstitutional, but that individualized reviews that consider race and other factors are constitutional. Thus, a Yes on Prop 16 would aid individuals' race, ethnicity, color, and national origin to play a factor in admission processes.
