I recently visited an elementary school in Marin County site where Maria and the Lost Calf took place.. Margarida Da Silva and I visited three different second grade classes throughout the day, and shared stories from the past as they are studying Immigration, Pioneers, and more. Margarida shared how she came to America and brought some lovely mementos, and the Azorean flag- the children enjoyed them all! I read part of my book, and Margarida read part in Portuguese, and ...the children were captivated! Maria and the Lost Calf is a wonderful children’s book for us to share in classrooms throughout California it aligns with California State Curriculum Frameworks for History/Social Science for second, third, and fourth grades. Examples: Grade 2 2.1: Students differentiate between things that happened long ago and things that happened yesterday. Grade Three: Our Local History: Discovering Our Past and Our Traditions Grade Four 4.2 Students describe social, political, cultural, and economic life and interactions among people of California, from the pre-Columbian societies to the Spanish mission and Mexican rancho periods. school visit 2Please contact www.PortugueseBooks.Org for a school visit by the author of Maria and the Lost Calf, if you are interested, or would like to acquire copies for your classes, school libraries, book fairs or simply as a Christmas Holiday gift for the children in your family.

THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS GIFT As I am reading your wonderful book, I am thinking about my Tia Lucy, my Mom’s sister and only living sibling of 7 children, who lived in San José for many years and went to the Five Wounds Church. She was married there also. My Tia Lucy is 90 years old now and is still very alert and healthy. I know she would love to read your book. wrote a book reader, Diane from Stanislaus County, California. This is a common reaction from hundreds of reader...s who have purchased the Five Wounds Portuguese National Parish’s centennial book, A Vestibule to Heaven. Authored by Miguel Valle Ávila, edited by Lúcia Soares, and designed by Roberto Ávila, the book was printed locally by Spectrum Lithograph, a Bay Area award-winning Portuguese-American owned business and published by the Portuguese Heritage Publications of California. The deluxe, hardbound edition contains 314 color photographs across 192 pages. The book includes a historical perspective of San José at the turn of the 20th century, the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition and its relationship to Five Wounds Church, and the parish history between 1914 and 2014. The book is further embellished by photos of the church and A Day in the Life of the Parish with photos of events that bring the parish to life. Uma Entrada para o Céu (An Entrance to Heaven) was columnist and poet José Raposo’s title for his biweekly column. Raposo stated that I can affirm that this book should be proudly displayed in the homes of any Portuguese or his/her descendants and there should be no home without it. A Vestibule to Heaven is available for sale from the Five Wounds Portuguese National Parish office (www.FiveWoundsChurch.org) and online at www.PortugueseBooks.org. All proceeds benefit the Five Wounds Portuguese National Parish.

Immigrants Stories Your Opportunity to Become a Published Author Portuguese Heritage Publications’ ongoing project Immigrants Stories has received wide acceptance by the Portuguese community in California, judging by the number of stories that we have received to-date. Because we continue to receive scripts of individual and family stories, we decided to extend the deadline for new scripts through the end of November 2014. There is one caveat, we are now looking for uniqu...e stories; stories that fall outside of the typical immigrant story; stories that don’t necessarily read like a standard individual biography; stories so outrageously real where the unexpected is just around the corner, that will keep reader’s interest and curiosity at high pitch level. If you have such a story, even if the script is not perfect (we have editors that can polish it up) don’t be shy, send it to us at: [email protected], or call (408) 272-1222, there is a very good change that your script will be included in our publication. If you rather contact someone at PHPC directly, please email Henrique Dinis at: [email protected]. or call 408-807-3235. If you visit Northern California, try to include a trip to the Marin headlands, and West Marin, and the Point Reyes area in your visit. It will certainly be a beautiful and worthwhile visit, and will give you an idea of why many Azorean immigrants settled there, and worked on dairy farms. The climate and landscape, and proximity to the sea is very like the Azorean Islands. I think the immigrants who came must have had tugs on their hearts, seeing such a familiar landscape.... There are Visitor Centers at the Headlands, hiking trails, and you can drive to some beaches. And as you are there, maybe on a lonely, foggy trail, think of Maria (from my book Maria and the Lost Calf), and how she loved living there on their dairy farm. What Readers are saying about the children's book: Maria and the Lost Calf This story brings me to tears as I read it to my children. The paintings are majestic. The story is full of emotion and the beautiful heritage of Portuguese culture that Maria is blessed to enjoy. Thank you so much for writing this book! Kitano... Received the book today and couldn’t wait to read it! Such a precious story, well written and illustrated!!!Very talented couple whom I’m so happy to have gotten to know!!! Hope a lot of copies are purchased!! Good luck! Kim Hi, It seems a really wonderful the book, I have a sister living in Azores and also my ancestors were from there. The funny thing is that although I don’t know California I always loved to hear stories from Portuguese who went there to live centuries ago and I even thought (I have a degree in Cinema) of directing a documentary about it. So you have two places I love in your book :) I hope to purchase it soon! I’m sure it will inspire me! Rita I am so excited! I got my book today. I must say, I was so psyched to buy it, I didn’t know it was a hardcover. That was a nice surprise. Beautifully illustrated, all the paintings portray a mood and emotion in the story. Love how all the pages are in two languages. The story is a sweet story that gives a great background to one of the many reasons I love the United States, we truly are a melting pot and love stories that show this. When school starts back, I will donate it to the school I work at as a gift. I never hesitate at the opportunity to give to the creative community, and giving the children something unique to read. It’s stories like this that teach our children, home really is where the heart is. Thanks Kate and Dwight! - Jenni High praise for Maria and the Lost Calf! Raising children in CA makes this book dear to my heart. It’s full of rich history and a deep appreciation for a family’s farm life. This sweet book exudes love and is sure to be a classic. - Amy The watercolors are incredible and as gentile as the warm story they illustrate. The love and reassurance of our father and his protective eye guides us through even our most fearful moments. Thank you Kate and Dwight for this moving tale! - Kate Maria and the Lost Calf, is a children’ s book written by Kate Morejohn, illustrated by Dwight Morejohn and published by Portuguese Heritage Publications of California, in partnership with the Fundacao Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento (FLAD), and the Sausalito-Cascais Sister Cities Foundation.
