Local muralist Moses Ball showcases Black communities in a positive light through his art. Check out his mural The Heart of Hyde Park on the corner of Crenshaw Blvd. and Slauson Ave. It was birthed out of a desire to speak up about possible gentrification that could happen in our community...," Ball said. It’s a real vision of what the community is. This community is home. If this is home to you, you see everything through rose colored glasses sometimes. But it’s als...o accurate. We have real people here who are fighting for housing rights, who try to get good and healthy food in the community, and who are just trying to make a positive impact. There’s no place that I’d rather be than right here on Crenshaw. The thing that I love about this mural is that even non-famous folks or less known folks who had major impact on the community are highlighted in the same light that he (Nipsey Hussle) was.

Starr Andrews, a Baldwin Hills and Inglewood native, performance videos to Black Like Me by Mickey Guyton and Whip My Hair by Willow Smith have gone viral on social media. She recently was named the first recipient of the $25,000 Mabel Fairbanks Skatingly Yours Fund. Click the link to read about her journey through figure skating and to watch her videos U.S. Figure Skating The performance was based on what Black people have been going through, Andrews said. I did that program to bring awareness. I chose the song 'Black like Me' because there aren’t a lot of skaters who are Black like me in the sport, so I thought that program was very important to bring awareness to that. When I was doing that program, the thought of equal rights and social injustice was always in the back of my mind.

Destination Crenshaw featured The Los Angeles Standard Newspaper Owner and Publisher Jason Lewis in their Faces of Black LA series. #FacesofBlackLA Meet Jason Douglas Lewis, owner and publisher of LA Standard Newspaper. Jason grew up near Crenshaw Blvd. and Washington Blvd., graduated from Fairfax High School and UCLA UCLA Arts, and is a writer and a photographer who produces positive content regarding Black communities in Los Angeles. His articles range from topics around f...ellow Angelenos, small businesses, and community service programs in our neighborhoods that have made great contributions to our city but have not received much media spotlight. It is important to Jason that he highlights positive images of Black LA in his paper because those stories often get overshadowed in favor of negative news like crime, unemployment, or poor education. His goal is to change the perspective that Black people live in war zones and use his platform as the runner of a local Black media outlet to find stories that combat that narrative. To Jason, Black LA is home. "Black folks in LA are awesome, and everyone should know that! The Los Angeles Standard Newspaper is extremely community driven. I love it when people flip through the newspaper and see people who they know, places that they go, and learn something new about something or someone in their neighborhood. Black LA is home. The Lewis family has been in Los Angeles for over 100 years. I've lived the bulk of my life on Crenshaw and I'm not planning on leaving. I love the Black people and the Black culture in this city."
