We love using the sign for play while we are playing with our little ones during speech therapy. This weekend practice using the sign for play. Put both of your hands in a fist bringing out both thumbs and pinkies and shake both hands at the same time! Have fun playing with your little one this weekend!! #speechtherapy #slp2be #bilingual #cdis #slpgrad #babysign #sandiego #lamesa #eastcounty #sandiegocounty #baby #toddler #speechlanguagepathology

How often do you go to the store with your little one? We know that our little ones love to be out and about running errands with us. When we go out it is natural for us to describe what we see and talk about what we are doing. However, for some families this may not be the case. This week, try taking your little one to the store with the intention of creating a language filled environment for them. Here are somethings you can do with them. -signing and saying the words ...of items you need have your child help you put things in the basket or cart having them help you place fruits and veggies in the small bags and saying in every time you put a fruit or veggie in the bag going around the fruit and veggie isle and having your child hold the items and describe them. Example, this one is bumpy or this one is soft. Happy shopping!! #speechtherapy #slp #slp2be #sandiego #lamesa #sandiegocounty #toddler #baby #cdis #slpgrad

Halloween seems like it would be fun for everyone. However, sometimes this holiday can be a little bit stressful for some. An event that seems so simple and natural may be difficult for others. This holiday season, let’s try to be more mindful and accepting of everyone. When handing out candy try your best to not put so much pressure on the trick-or-treaters and remember to be kind. If a child approaches your house and does not say trick-or-treat don’t force them they may b...e anxious, shy, have a speech motor planning issue, or may be non-verbal. If a child grabs more than one piece of candy be patient. If a child is not wearing a costume he/she may not like the feeling of wearing a costume due to sensory processing issues. If a child seems to big to be riding in a stroller or is being carried by a parent their child may have cerebral palsy or a neuromuscular disability which may cause them to tire out easily. Not all disabilities are visible. Be kind and remember every child should have the opportunity to experience a great Halloween. We hope you all have a wonderful Halloween! #slp #slp2be #speechtherapy #halloween #mildcp #sandiego #sandiegocounty #lamesa #autismawareness #slpgrad #bilingualslp #cdis See more

It’s Fun fact Friday! Here is a little something we wanted to share with you! Sabotage the environment; well that sounds funny doesn’t it? As a speech language pathologist this is something that we do often during our sessions. To sabotage an environment means to create a space where your child is given the opportunity to ask for help. Sometimes as a parent or caretaker we tend to over anticipate our children’s needs. If we give our children everything before they ask for it ...we aren’t giving them the opportunity to have them use their words to communicate their needs. So here are some tips that you can use in your home so that you are able to create more opportunities for language. When giving your child a snack try giving them less food than you usually would. Once they finish their portion they will more than likely want more. Instead of giving them more right away, wait a few seconds and see if they vocalize or provide a gesture indicating that they want more. try putting them to bed without their favorite blanket or stuffed animal and see if they ask for it. put toys out of reach allowing them to ask you to maybe open the container or get their favorite book off the shelf. Give them an empty cup. Allowing them to have the opportunity to ask you for milk. Most likely your child will want to communicate to you in some form (gesture, vocalization, or word) that they need/want something. Let us know if you have anymore questions about this strategy! #slp #speech therapy #sandiegospeechtherapy #lamesa #autism #education #bilingual #slpgrad #communicatondisorders

A great visual created by @mrsspeechiep explaining the differences between a milestone and an average for their expressive language. Do you think your child is a late talker? Give us a call at 619-786-0744 and we will be more than happy to guide you in the right direction. #sandiego #sandiegospeechtherapy #slp #sancarlos #lamesa #regram #autism #sandiegocounty #speechtherapy
