A great read. This was not my experience at all as a gymnast. I was lucky and had amazing coaches, but for many this holds so true!

This is a great article and a great collaboration of departments that should be helping student-athletes. I hope more schools start focusing their efforts on mental health and realize it's importance in athlete success.

This is a great article written by one of my athletes about retiring from the sport you love! https://medium.com//taking-the-final-fall-a-life-after-pro

Learning a new skill in sports is a rush like no other. I remember that feeling well. Watching my son pitch for the first time ever gave me a thrill of a different kind, as a parent, not an athlete. I was nervous, anxious, excited, and happy all at the same time. Jackson was so elated for tonight's game. He couldn't wait to get out on that pitcher's mound. He warmed up a few pitches and settled into a groove. With each strike that crossed the plate he gained a little c...onfidence. Every pitch wasn't perfect and at one point he seemed to be getting a bit frustrated. After a few words from one of the coaches, he took a deep belly breath, relaxed, and regained focus. His pitches got faster and more accurate. He came back fighting to get two strike outs and the game ball. He walked away from tonight's game feeling like a million bucks. That's all I want for all of my athlete's to feel. It didn't matter that his team didn't win tonight. Sometimes it's not about winning or losing but how you play the game! See more

My amazing friend and former college gymnastics teammate is so inspiring. At 40 years old she's about to become a professional athlete. Watch this incredible video on her story. https://www.facebook.com/tracey.ackerma//10152738266350887

Not a bad view for the days ride

A couple weekends ago I had a feeling I hadn't experienced in almost 15 years since my days as a competitive gymnast. That feeling was complete and total FEAR! I went on a long mountain bike ride through Carizzo Gorge along an abandoned railroad. The path went right next to or on the railroad track the entire time, but always right along side of the gorge. There were tunnels that were pitch black where you could only see with a light and old wooden train trestles that wer...e rickety and had missing or sunken ties and bolts sticking up. I do not normally have a fear of heights, but these bridges took me to a whole new level. The one in this picture is the longest curved wooden trestle in the world. At first I was going to ride across to get it over with quicker. Then the fact that there was only a cable on the side separating me from a sure death took hold. Nope, wasn't going to cross riding. So I got off to walk. I took a few steps on the ties in between the tracks. Nope, that way wasn't good either with some of the ties missing. I was so afraid I was physically shaking. I was going to walk along the metal grates right next to the track, but where was I going to push my bike? That way wasn't comforting either. I could see straight through the grate to the bottom of the gorge. So I finally decided to walk along the top of vertical railroad ties. There were big bolts sticking up everywhere, which I definitely had to be careful not to trip over, but the wood wasn't creaking the way the grate was and I couldn't see through these to the bottom. I pushed my bike on the grate and took each step very carefully. I was talking to myself the entire time giving myself positive reinforcement that I could do this. When my breathing would get erratic I would work on controlling it. This was a true test for me! When I got to one of the last trestles my husband pushed me to ride across. With a lot of encouragement, I did! This ride was beautiful and exhilerating and I will never forget it! See more

My oldest felt the rush you get when you set a goal and don't let anything get in your way. He's been wanting to drop in on a ramp for some time and today was the day!
