Happy solstice, everyone! With more hours of sunshine, folk wisdom tells us that all plants will catch up by the end of the month regardless of how early we got them in the ground! See all you need to know about the summer solstice: Almanac.com/summer

A striking tree located in our Butterfly Garden is the Tabebuia avellanedae (Pink Taebuia). This particular one was donated by the Conejo Valley Garden Club on Arbor Day, April 24, 1990. Native to Brazil, this tree has many uses, including tea made from the inner bark. The timber is valued for cabinet making, musical instruments, even balls for various sports!

Irises are a favorite at the Conejo Valley Botanic Garden, with many native varieties in bloom right now at the garden, including Iris douglasiana (Douglas iris) and Iris tenax (Toughleaf iris). You will see these two varieties also growing in oak and conifer forests, as well as open prairies and logged land, in California, Oregon and Washington. There are actually 280 species of irises in the world, and they take their name from the Greek word for a rainbow, which is also the name for the Greek goddess of the rainbow, Iris. Irises bloom in white, pink, yellow and purple usually from spring to early summer, and attract hummingbirds to the garden. #conejoblooms #conejogarden #springblooms #irises

While the Conejo Valley Botanic Garden may be temporarly closed to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there is still a lot happening inside and our volunteers are making sure the garden is being properly maintained. Right now, the spring blooms are so pretty, and we want to share what's there, albeit virtually. Everyday we will bring you a new bloom, and hope that our visitors can see them in person once again when we reopen. We receive quite a number of inquiries ab...out the status of the Matilija poppies inside the garden. They are just starting to bloom, but we still have about another month or so when they're at their peak. Today we got a couple videos of what is there so far (from various places in the garden). Note: Apologies for the fingers in one video due to taking video while walking dog. #conejogarden #conejoflowers #springflowers #matilijapoppies See more
