Our first and second graders in Mrs. Barbi and Ms. Barbi's classes, respectively, took an Earth Day pledge to reduce, reuse, and recycle! Each student wrote out a special promise for Earth Day and designed their own Earth model for the pledge. Besides learning how to be climate conscious, Ms. Barbi's second grade class is also going "extra" green this month by reading on the grass each afternoon in April. Learning about how to help the planet has never been so creatively fun! Mrs. Veas' kindergarteners learned about recycling and how important it is to take care of our planet. While wearing Earth Day hats and armed with blue and green markers, the kids created planet Earth using coffee filters! With a few spritzes of water, they learned about chromatography as they watched the coffee filter absorb the water and draw it to the edge, with the colored marker moving along ...with it. The colors began to separate and blend as they traveled together creating the land and water of our planet! Our fourth graders participated in a hands-on STEM lab to determine the best location to build an earthquake-safe structure! They engineered a simulation by building model buildings from thin cardboard. They then used two pieces of thicker cardboard, sliding them side by side, to represent the tectonic plates of a fault line. Our Pre-Kindergarten class made beautiful pressed flower artwork! The kids first went on a nature walk to gather flowers and leaves for their projects. When returning to the classroom, they explored the colors, textures, and smells of everything they collected. Then it was time to create their own masterpieces! Ms. Barbi's second grade class continues their art history studies! The next artist profiled was an American female leader in art, Georgia O'Keeffe. The students learned that O'Keeffe was influenced by American modernism and Precisionism, with her earlier works focused on enlarged flowers, skyscrapers, and landscapes. After O'Keeffe moved to New Mexico, she became known for paintings of animal skulls and flowers in the desert landscape. Mrs. Kurpjuweit's third grade class practiced public speaking by creating "pencil puppet" skits! The students worked in pairs to write a short script, create pencil puppets, and then perform their skits for the class. Our fourth grade students learned about Vincent Van Gogh in their artist study and Starry Night project. Students explored Van Gogh's unique style of art, his influence on expressionism, and his different stroke styles.
