Job Centered Learning Sunday, August 6, 9:00 pm on KCSM-TV also 8/7/17 @ 2:00 am and 8/20/17 @ 9:00 pm A film from Bay Area documentary maker Bob Gliner ... Many economists, business owners, and labor leaders have raised alarm about a rising skills gap in the United States between the jobs that are available and those with the skills needed to fill them. This gap, largely notable among the wide range of careers in the construction trades but rapidly expanding to other occupations as well, is being driven, in part, by the retirement of baby boomers and the denigration of ‘blue collar’ work in our nation’s schools. While many of these jobs, despite only requiring a high school diploma, pay beyond a living wage, high schools across the country have largely ignored these possible career options and instead focused on sending all of their graduates to college. Yet, evidence clearly demonstrates that when high schools introduce vocational or career technical education as part of their curriculum, students not only learn valuable occupational skills, but are also more motivated to learn traditional core subject matter such as math, English and science because they see their connection to the occupational paths they are pursuing. Job Centered Learning takes a critical look at the wide range of career education some schools are offering masonry, fashion design, forensic science, welding, aquaculture, culinary arts, aircraft maintenance, animal husbandry as well as the way such course offerings are framed in a variety of educational contexts. Filled with insightful and provocative interviews with a diverse range of students, teachers, employers and leading experts in the field as well as vivid imagery of students actively engaged in life changing classroom experiences, Job Centered Learning will add to the national debate around both the vitality of our economy as well as the role schools can play in shaping how a new generation of students can find more meaningful educational experiences, fulfilling livelihoods and worthwhile careers. FREE TO ROCK June 20th @ 10PM on KCSM-TV 60-1 second showing June 21 @ 3AM Ten years in the making, FREE TO ROCK explores how American rock and roll contributed to the end of the Cold War. In the eyes of the Soviet Ministry of Culture, western rock music combined the twin evils of spreading the English language and encouraging illicit free enterprise. It was prohibited by the Soviet and Eastern Block authorities and deemed as propaganda. However, the "soft power" of American ...rock music was pumped into Eastern Europe and the USSR by Voice of America and Radio Free Europe. This forbidden music inspired thousands of underground rock bands and tens of millions of their passionate supporters. Their enthusiasm for rock and roll became a youth movement that openly defied the Communist government. Narrated by Kiefer Sutherland, the film features interviews with former President Jimmy Carter; Mikhail Gorbachev, former president of the USSR; musicians Billy Joel and Mike Love; Robert Santelli, Executive Director of the Grammy Museum; Oleg Kalugin, a former major general in the Soviet KGB; Soviet rock artists Stas Namin, Pete Anderson and Andrey Makarevich; and other scholars and experts. OMAHA BEACH: HONOR AND SACRIFICE Broadcast Tuesday June 6 @ 11:00 pm on KCSM-TV 60, Comcast 717, DirecTV 43... Second airing Wednesday June 7 @ 4:00 am On D-Day, a roughly 7,000-yard stretch of beach in Normandy, France given the code name "Omaha" proved to be the Allies' biggest obstacle to the success of Operation Overlord. The assignment to take Omaha Beach, establish a beachhead, and move inland into France was given to two American divisions - the already battle-hardened 1st Infantry Division (The Big Red One) and the untested 29th Infantry Division (The Blue and the Gray), who had yet to see any combat in World War II. American Naval Combat Demolition Units also hit the beach that day, writing their own individual stories of horror and heroism. Seven decades after the "Boys of Omaha Beach" landed, many veterans are returning to this part of the Normandy coast for the last time. Other soldiers who were there on D-Day have also come back for the first time since that historic day, looking for closure as they enter the final years of their lives. OMAHA BEACH: HONOR AND SACRIFICE shows the very personal stories of several veterans as they return to Omaha Beach and documents the celebration in Normandy that continues to this day as a result of their acts of courage and determination on June 6, 1944.

CANINE SOLDIERS: the Militarization of Love MEMORIAL DAY Monday, May 29 @10:00 pm on KCSM-TV broadcast channel 60-1, Comcast 717, DirecTV 43... Canine Soldiers: the Militarization of Love is a one-hour documentary film that explores the intimate bond between Military Working Dogs and their handlerscombat soldiers who make life-and-death decisions based on the instincts and behavior of the dogs who lead their patrols. In wars where the rules of engagement have shifted from traditional combat to the unforeseen and the invisible, these highly trained dogs are saving soldiers’ lives and giving them comfort, hope and protection. Military working dog teams have become the most effective agents in detecting explosives and chemical weapons at home and abroad. Their mission is to save lives, not kill. From rigorous training to deployment, we follow our soldier handlers to learn what it takes to become a successful MWD team. We explain how the dogs are bred, how their relationships with their handlers develop, and what it’s like for our handler teams to live in interdependence on the war front. Deployed soldiers eat, sleep, shower and patrol with their dog by their side. This special bond is critical in forming a relationship of trust where each understands and reads each other’s cues. One trainer remarked, "These soldiers don't have battle buddies to the right and left of them like a regular line soldier. Their only battle buddy really is that dog. They literally place their lives in the nose of that dog. Canine Soldiers will be the first war documentary told from the point of view of a soldier/dog team, molding together their poignant stories with reflections from notable animal scholars who think outside the box about the significance of co-species evolution. Relying on dogs to keep us safe in war is only the continuation of a long history of co-evolution with canines. Even in this age of advanced technology, we are again relying on a primitive animal’s superior sense of smell to survive. Does being dependent on another species to keep us safe during war open our hearts to new truths about ourselves, our connection to nature and ultimately to what it means to be human? The film also raises the ethical question: Is coopting a sentient being in conflicts that involve violence ever justifiable? Second airing 5/30/17, 3:00 am

COUNTING FROM INFINITY: YITANG ZHANG AND THE TWIN PRIME CONJECTURE Sunday, April 30th at 10:00 PM Monday, May 1st at 3:00 AM... KCSM TV 60-1, Comcast 717 COUNTING FROM INFINITY: YITANG ZHANG AND THE TWIN PRIME CONJECTURE centers on an exciting string of mathematical discoveries. It began in April 2013 when Yitang "Tom" Zhang, a virtually unknown mathematician working as an adjunct professor at the University of New Hampshire, submitted a paper to the Annals of Mathematics. Zhang had made an important breakthrough in Number Theory by solving the Twin Prime Conjecture (pairs of prime numbers that differ by two). His work, Small Gaps Between Primes, was immediately recognized as an important mathematical break- through, and Zhang became an instant celebrity - a role for which he was unprepared. The film documents Zhang's quiet perseverance amidst adversity, and his preference for thinking and working in solitude. Zhang's story is interwoven with a history of the Twin Prime Conjecture as told by several mathematicians, many of whom have wrestled with this challenging problem: Daniel Goldston, Kannan Soundararajan, Andrew Granville, Peter Sarnak, Enrico Bombieri and James Maynard. By chronicling the series of rapid developments around the twin prime problem in 2013, and the many individuals who contributed to it, the film offers a glimpse at how mathematics progresses. A snapshot of a great moment in mathematical history, COUNTING FROM INFINITY is at once a biographical portrait of a unique individual and the exciting story of his discovery.
