We added two new bus shelter locations in #CD6 with more to come! 9 out of 10 metro riders are low-income, people of color. In the Valley, many have to wait for the bus in the heat & the rain without protection. These shelters will support a transit experience riders deserve. Thank you to our partners Investing in Place, Climate Resolve, City of Los Angeles Bureau of Street Services, Outfront/JCDecaux, and Pacoima Beautiful!

Today we honor a civil rights activist and champion for workers rights, Dolores Huerta. A fierce leader who worked for protections, fair wages & dignity for California's field workers; at 91, Dolores Huerta never tires in her advocacy for the working poor, women, and children. #SiSePuede

We created our Kids First Program to provide educational support at family shelters. When COVID-19 hit, we knew at-home learning would be hard for unhoused students so we pivoted to distanced learning pods. As the school year nears the end, we're so proud of their hard work!

Join us tomorrow for a socially distanced Community Cleanup in Council District 6! Meet at Canterbury Ave and Van Nuys Blvd to begin at 8 AM. Tools will be provided. See flyer below for more details

"When we decided to close the schools, nobody asked us." With school closures & at-home learning, women had to choose between their careers & caring for their families. Watch my full conversation with Reshma Saujani on Women in the Workplace https://nury-martinez.com/women-in-the-workplace

How often do women feel they need to be quiet about an issue at work or speak out and risk career stagnation? This is shameful. Workplaces should lift women & people of color up, not tell them seek counseling, work from home or go on leave and never address the actual issue.

492,000 women re-entered the workforce last month as schools reopened in-person learning. This is encouraging but there's still a lot of work to do to regain the progress we made before the pandemic. Join us tomorrow as we discuss this and more! RSVP: http://bit.ly/MarshallPlanForMoms

The death count might have become almost numbing as it ceaselessly grows daily, but it’s important to continue to put into perspective just how deadly this virus is. Please stay home, stay safe, and wear a mask. #WeAreInThisTogether

The people have spoken. Congratulations to President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris. With new leadership, comes hope and possibility of real change. We owe this victory to our Black and Latino brothers and sisters our friends, our family and our community those who showed up to vote, and those most affected by this pandemic who continue to build this country, despite the lack of social and economic opportunity, those that have everything to lose they delivered us to the finish line. #BidenHarris2020

Some of you may have seen "me" respond with the following comment,"Please message me on this private number (623)246-2565." This is NOT me and that is NOT my telephone number. We are looking into this matter. If you would like to contact me, please leave a message.

Count every vote. In this Presidential race, every vote matters. For those who have sacrificed the health and the safety of their families working day in and day out then racing to the polls to vote, your voice counts. For the mothers who sacrificed their careers to provide care for their children, your voice counts. For the business owners who are struggling to stay afloat, your voice counts. We can wait if it means ensuring every voter’s voice in America is heard. Democracy is worth the wait. Keep counting those votes. We’ll be here. Respect the process. #counteveryvote #vote2020 #election2020

Great victory in the courts for #DACA! After ruling a Trump official, Chad Wolf, was illegally appointed and lacked the authority when he ordered that no new DACA applications would be accepted, US Federal Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis further ordered the Trump administration to fully restore DACA and have application information available on its website by Monday, Dec. 7th. This would allow an estimated 300,000 additional Dreamers to apply for the program. Our City looks forw...ard to working with and holding the Biden-Harris administration accountable in building dignified and thorough immigration policies for our immigrant youth and communities. Vote like your life depends on it, because it does! This election will directly impact the next four years, and generations to come. When we think of our working communities tirelessly going from one job to the next putting themselves at risk of COVID-19, the undocumented children being taken from their parents, women who have had to choose between their careers and their families during this health crisis, and those who cannot vote, we VOTE for them, and for ourselves and for the future. DON'T RISK IT! Make sure your ballot gets in on time and counted - take it to a voting center or official ballot drop box near you!

I LOVE Halloween! It's one of my favorite holidays. Here's a couple of throwback pics of my family from previous years. It's a tradition for us to dress up but this year, we will not. During the pandemic that's our choice. Whatever you choose to do, please do it safely. This Halloween, stay home and celebrate. There are tons of festive activities to get in the Halloween spirit that do not require leaving your home. I'm praying next year's Halloween will be epic! Stay safe. Stay spooky. Stay home. #Halloween2020

Let’s show up for each other! When we vote, we don’t just vote for ourselves, we vote for our neighbors, we vote for those who cannot vote, we vote for disenfranchised communities, we vote to protect women’s rights, we vote for racial and social justice. In this election that is truer than it’s ever been. #VOTE

At last night’s 2nd Latina Empowered Health Summit, we celebrated what it means to be a woman sharing personal stories of triumph, tackling fear and anxiety, and turning our dreams into a reality. Thank you to everyone who attended virtually and to my co-host Alejandra Campoverdi of The Well Woman Health Coalition for leading a beautiful roundtable discussion that took us from our childhood, to the memories of our hard-working parents to what drives us as Latinas ...to give back to our families and communities. A warm thank you to our keynote speaker Mandy Gonzalez, mega #Broadway star, for sharing her inspiring story as a breast cancer survivor and advocate. Knowledge is power, she said and it is also a part of self-care. There were many takeaways thanks to our panelists Latinx Therapy's Adriana Alejandre and Univision anchor Yarel Ramos who took a deep dive into topics of identity, the stigmatization around mental health, normalizing therapy, and holding uncomfortable conversations to break down the barriers with family members. Remember, we each show up in different ways and part of that means checking in with ourselves, taking three - not one- deep breaths and saying it’s okay to not be okay. Let’s continue to advocate for ourselves and the people we love. #breastcancerawarenessmonth + beyond

Today is #LatinaEqualPay Day know your worth! Latinas would have to work until the age of 116 to equal what white men would earn by the age of 60 due to the wage gap. More than 50 years have passed since the Equal Pay Act of 1963, and women in the U.S., particularly Latina women, are still not paid what they are owed. Close the gap!... These alarming statistics come at a time when the weight of COVID-19 has fallen largely on Latinas and people of color. Many Latinas are working in industries that were hammered by the pandemic, and others have had to make the difficult decision between work, motherhood and home schooling. We push through, though, day after day, hard-working. Balancing life through a global health crisis feels like a tug of war sometimes, juggling the many responsibilities and varied roles we play. We have to remember to advocate for ourselves and our community we are powerful! Let’s never lose sight of our strength, our history, our passions, and unapologetically continue to carve that space where we belong. Equal pay for equal work! #mujeresunidas #womenunite #changemakers #paygap #latinxPOWER

To assist low-income families and youth already vulnerable to economic uncertainty before COVID-19 hit and made worse by the pandemic, yesterday I introduced legislation calling for the creation of a new Department for Families, Children & Community Investment. As part of my Families First agenda, the Department will incorporate the work and goals of my motion’s co-presenter Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez who has worked with our young people and the Executive Task Force on You...th Development. COVID-19 has demonstrated that, in the face of a crisis, problems that our families face arise not independently, but are compounded by ones that already existed, especially for our low-income families. Our working-poor families need a focused commitment from the City of Los Angeles in order to help them recover and allow their children to reach their full potential. Whether it’s job training and resources for the parents or youth development programs and support for their children, a Department of Families, Children and Community Investment will help us create long-term programs and policies to build more resilient and equitable communities.
