FIREFIGHTER OF THE MONTH Firefighter/Paramedic Afara Lalaind FF/PM Lalaind is at the forefront of the LAFD's effort to help vaccinate L.A.'s dependent and home...bound population - mainly elderly and disabled persons without access to vaccine sites. Although technically assigned to Fire Station 65 in Watts, Lalaind has been detailed to the LAFD's COVID Division for nearly a year. From March of 2020 through December, she was an integral part of the LAFD’s mobile testing team, working in some of L.A.’s hardest-hit communities. She is an integral organizer of the community pop-up vaccination sites, and efforts to take the vaccination operation directly to at-risk assisted living facilities. Lalaind dedicates what little free time she has towards her children and family. She looks forward to rounding the curve on the pandemic so she can resume her carpentry and woodworking hobbies. Before COVID struck, Afara could most likely be found in her woodshop, or making renovations to her new home. I had to shelve most of my projects because there just aren’t enough hours in the day to fight the pandemic, be a mom, and rebuild my fireplace mantle, joked Lalaind. Happy Heart (AKA Valentine's) Day! We'd like to interrupt this year's Valentine's Day to have some real and important Heart Talk. Whether you're sharing the day... with your significant other, hanging out with your Galetines/Palentines or completely oblivious to the festivities of the day - this post applies to YOU! Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, women, and people of most racial and ethnic groups in the United States.* While taking care of your heart through a healthy diet and exercise regimen is critical - many people are already down the path of poor heart health. So we want to be sure you understand the common signs and symptoms of a heart attack (flow of blood to the heart is blocked): Pressure, tightness, pain, or a squeezing or aching sensation in your chest or arms that may spread to your neck, jaw or back Nausea, indigestion, heartburn or abdominal pain Shortness of breath Cold sweat Fatigue Lightheadedness or sudden dizziness These are only 'common' signs/symptoms and they can vary by person. Some can also experience a 'silent heart attack' which may have no symptoms or can be masked as something else (flu, muscle soreness). It's important to stay on top of your heart health, see your doctor regularly and follow any recommended regimens whether lifestyle or medical. Do you want to become a LAFD firefighter? Then put a mark in your calendar and head to our Instagram at 1PM (PST) on Jan 10th. We’re going LIVE with Battalion C...hief Kris Larson from JoinLAFD to talk all things hiring! You can also submit questions right now in our Instagram Stories. BUT Be SURE to first go to the recruitment website www.joinlafd.org and read ALL the material available before asking questions. There is an abundance of information on the site which answers 95% of the questions we get. Taking the initiative to get as much information on your own and then coming forward with questions you don’t find answers to - that’s the kind of work it takes to be a firefighter. Alex Gillman

#Repost @losangelesfiredepartment LAFD Recruits at Drill Tower 81 (Valley Recruit Training Center in Panorama City) had their "overnighter" last night, where they got a taste of working much of the night, responding to several simulated emergencies (many with live fire). Our recruits learn a lot of individual skills in a short period of time. As the end of the drill tower (or fire academy) draws near, this overnight exercise provides an excellent opportunity to integrate ...these skills practically. : LAFD - - - #LAFD #VRTC #drilltower #drilltower81 #recruit #panoramacity #overnighter #firefighter #joinLAFD #oneteamLAFD See more

Posted @withregram @ralph.terrazas.1 It’s here! The LAFD RS3. (RS stands for robotic solution). The LAFD is the first Fire Department in our country to acquire this cutting edge piece of equipment. It will enable us to continue interior firefighting in large commercial buildings where there is a concern of building collapse. This will enhance our firefighting capability while reducing risk to our firefighters. Thank you to our LAFD Foundation for procuring this valuable piece of equipment!

#Repost @losangelesfiredepartment We remember: 40 Years Ago Today, on September 27, 1980, the passing of Los Angeles Fire Department Firefighter Frank Hotchkin. Our Brother Frank is fondly remembered by those who had the honor to work alongside him, and by generations of firefighers since, as the massive Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center building where he perished in the line of duty, is now an LAFD Training Center named in his honor. UFLAC and the LAFD have joined forces to promote and support Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Our primary goal is to support those personally affected by cancer and to reach thousands of people with the lifesaving message that cancer prevention and early detection can mean the difference between life and death. During the month of October, all members are authorized to wear the newly designed pink LAFD shirt while on duty to support Breast Cancer Awareness. By this very publi...c display, LAFD Firefighters and Paramedics can help to raise public awareness of this devastating disease. We hope as many of you as possible will wear a pink T-shirt. Breast Cancer Facts to Consider: Breast Cancer incidents in LA County are three times higher than that of the next leading cancer The second leading cause of mortality among Caucasian, African American, and Asian/Pacific Islander females Leading cause of mortality among Latina / Hispanic women in LA County Late diagnosis carries a survival rate of less than 7% Early diagnosis and treatment has a survival rate of over 91% #1 mortality rate of females between 21-40 years of age in LA County All net proceeds will go to UFLAC Fire Foundation to support LAFD families battling this devastating disease. On September 11th, we pause to remember a tragic day that changed America forever. On this solemn occasion, we typically gather in person to reflect upon the nearly 3,000 Americans who perished in the terrorist attacks and honor the 343 firefighters who died answering the call for help 19 years ago. This year, we cannot be together in person, but it does not diminish the importance of remembrance. The Los Angeles City Fire Department is honored to display a steel girder from the World Trade Center at our Frank Hotchkin Memorial Training Center. It is a constant reminder of the sacrifices so many Americans made on September 11, 2001, and guarantees that no day shall erase them from the memory of time.
