April 23rd is #nationallostpetawarenessday and the LA County Department of Animal Care & Control wants to make sure you know what to do, and what WE can do to help! All seven of our care centers have free 18"x24" Lost Pet Posters that are designed to be eye-catching backgrounds for your lost pet flier - ...grab a couple and put them in your neighborhood (remember, not everyone is on social media!). We have enhanced our website with robust action plans for lost & found animals, including digital lost pet flier templates for your use. And speaking of action, we've launched a team of volunteers called the Finders Seekers who will be keeping an eye on social media and our DACC website, providing information on possible connections when available. Does your pet need a microchip? Make an appointment to get one implanted at a vaccine/chip clinic (link in bio!) OR if you initiate or renew your pet license between now and June 30th, 2021 your pet gets a FREE microchip! Long story short, we want lost pets to be reunited with their families, and we're boosting our support. "To provide opportunities for pet owners to economically renew their pet licenses, the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC) is waiving late fees for renewed or new licenses purchased between April 15th and June 30th, 2021. These fee waivers are open for residents of all unincorporated Los Angeles County areas and the participating cities of Agoura Hills, Azusa, Carson, Inglewood, Irwindale, La Habra Heights, Maywood, Palmdale, ...Rolling Hills, Rolling Hills Estates, and Walnut. In addition to the late fee waiver, DACC is happy to offer a free microchip for all non-microchipped pets licensed during this time. Microchipping is highly encouraged because it greatly increases the likelihood that lost pets will be returned to their families. Microchipping is mandatory in all unincorporated County jurisdictions and many cities in Los Angeles County. Chip, Chip, Hooray! Never give up hope! Earlier this month Animal Control Officer Briana Aguilar was called to a junk yard where an akita was wandering, lost. When ACO Aguilar was able to secure the dog he was a little...shall we say...spicy. He wasn't in a friendly mood but ACO Aguilar patiently worked with him and safely scanned the dog, locating a microchip which traced to an owner. Unable to reach the owner via phone, ACO Aguilar mailed a letter advising of the dog’s i...mpoundment to the last known address. We soon learned that dog's name is Koji and that he was missing for NEARLY TWO YEARS! The owner lives over an hour away and immediately hopped on the 14 freeway to get his beloved Koji back home. It was amazing to see "spicy" Koji melt into "mild" Koji for as soon as he saw his long lost human he was a calm and happy guy. Also, it seems no grudges are being held, as Koji even gave kisses to the staff as he headed home. Remember our recent reminder to #checkthechip ? Make it happen! While we LOVE to find a microchip in a stray pet we are so very disappointed when we learn that the chip is registered to disconnected numbers, have out of date ownership info, or were never even registered at all! ... GET YOUR TISSUES READY Little Bella here went missing from her family 5 years ago. When she came into the care center, we scanned her for a microchip and we were able to contact her original owner! Well-meaning people with the best of intentions may think they immediately need to pick up and rescue small kittens found in their communities. The thing is, where there are small kittens, there is likely a mama cat nearby doing some "shopping" (you know, eating, so she can come back and feed her babies). Should you find kittens please leave them in place and wait for a few hours to see if mom comes back. Immediately intervene only if the kittens appear sick, injured, or are ...in immediate danger i.e. near a roadway or left out in the hot summer sun. Long story short: The best place for a kitten to be is in the care of their mama.
