#firesafety Not sure where to install your smoke detectors in your home? Keep reading, this post should help get you on the right track. 1. Smoke detectors are required to be installed in each sleeping room and adjoining areas (like a common hallway between each bedroom). 2. At minimum, there should be a smoke detector on each story, including basements and habitable attics. ... 3. Be sure to place your smoke detectors at least 3ft away from the door or opening to a bathroom with a bathtub or shower. 4. Be sure to place your smoke detector 3ft from any HVAC supply register or tip of ceiling paddle fan blades. 5. Keep your smoke detectors at least 20ft away from permanently installed cooking appliances. However, photoelectric smoke detectors should be a minimum of 6ft away and ionization should be a minimum of 10 ft away. 5. Primary power for your smoke detectors should be from the buildings wiring plus have a battery backup. 6. If your smoke detector is placed on a wall, be sure to install it no further away than 12 of the ceiling. Keep in mind that your home may have been built before these requirements in put into place. Homes typically do not have to be brought up to today’s standards unless modifications or additions to the structure have been completed that required a permit. Check with your local building department for addition information regarding this.
