Eating for Health and Resilience I love food. It is one of the great joys in life. I can think of nothing better than a delicious meal shared with family and friends. Food is not only extremely enjoyable and necessary for our survival, it is also absolutely powerful in its impact on our health. What we eat and how we eat will determine the course of our health, and in many cases the quality and duration of our lives. What we eat literally changes how our bodies function, dow...n to the level of our genome (the same can be said about how we sleep, exercise, and manage stress). For some of us this experience is obvious in my case certain foods trigger severe heartburn / indigestion. I used to take medication for many years before I decided to take matters into my own hands and change my diet to eliminate those sources of inflammation. I could have gone on taking omeprazole and eating whatever I wanted, but symptoms such as heartburn are alarm signals that should alert us to the need for change. Long-term medication utilization as a substitute for lifestyle change is a poor health decision. Sometimes these ‘alarms’ are more subtle such as gradual weight gain, loss of energy, headaches, or other pain not associated with an injury. I am always amazed, but never surprised at the consequences of what we eat. In my physical therapy practice I treat many clients with chronic pain. Chronic pain is often exacerbated by, and sometimes caused by food allergies or sensitivities. For some people certain foods trigger an inflammatory response that can manifest as bodily pain. Three of the most common triggers are sugar, wheat (not just gluten), and dairy. An elimination diet or allergy testing can help to identify specific triggers for specific individuals. Removing these triggering foods from the diet helps to reduce or eliminate the chronic pain. While a specific identification of dietary triggers is useful, and sometimes necessary, three general dietary principles work for most people: -Avoid processed foods and chemistry projects. If a label has more than a few ingredients on it, and reads more like a chemistry experiment than a menu item, don’t eat it. -Avoid refined, added sugars. Sugar is a drug and is highly addictive. It is also very detrimental to our health and excess sugar consumption is a leading contributor to lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. -Eat whole foods. Mostly vegetables. Organic whenever possible. For more information on how to navigate the murky nutrition waters. I encourage you to check out the following book for more guidance/advice from a reputable source - Dr Mark Hyman https://store.drhyman.com/food-the-book-1.html . I've found this information to be very helpful. And, for a good laugh, watch this short video...

Health principle #1 - Sleep at least 8 hours per night. Sleep is the most powerful medicine known to man. Particularly relevant at the current time is that sleep deprivation has been shown to reduce aspects of immune function by up to 70%. This short video is worth a watch to better understand how sleep impacts immune health, cardiovascular health, mental health, and more. ... If you need more convincing or are curious to learn more check out https://www.sleepdiplomat.com/ for more information from Matthew Walker (narrator of the video). For a much deeper dive read his book Why We Sleep . Managing Stress Mental health and physical health are inextricably linked. The physiological effects of chronic emotional stress are at the heart of many afflictions. These include chronic pain, depression, ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, heart disease, diabetes, and more. Robert Sapolsky wrote a very interesting book on this topic titled "Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers". I recommend it for more information on the link between mental, emotional, and physical health. In the hea...Continue reading

A note to our clients... Dear valued client, We hope this email finds you well. At this time, many of us are being forced to stop or slow down, at least professionally. If you’re like me, this is something that you rarely, if ever, take time to do. Our world and our lives are 24/7 non-stop full of duties, distractions, and deadlines. Amidst this backdrop we find it difficult to find time to do many of the little things that, if consistently implemented, will improve our ove...rall health and add to the quality and length of our lives. I encourage you to use this time to re-commit to doing the little things that bring you life and vitality. Ask yourself the question: What can I do now so that I come out of this time better than before? Below is a list of proven principles that will improve your health: Sleep at least 8 hours per night. Practice mindfulness and other strategies of stress reduction, such as meditation and prayer. Exercise at least 30 minutes each day. - Incorporate aspects of cardiovascular training (walking, jogging, swimming), strengthening, and mobility/flexibility. Eat clean and slow. - Eat organic when possible. - Eat whole foods. - Avoid processed foods as much as possible. - Avoid added sugars/high-fructose corn syrup. Over the next 4 weeks I will be posting regularly to our IPA Physio OC Facebook (IPA Physio - OC) page and Instagram. On these platforms I will expound on each aspect of the above list. These ideas are not new and they are not my own. They are the pillars of functional medicine. These are tried and true ways to improve mental, physical, and emotional health.

Pardon some of these images, however they are powerful reminders of the trauma that is sustained by the seatbelt that saved your life. Often patients come in with neck and lower back pain and wonder why we are treating their chests/ribcages and abdomen. Until they start to feel better..... Have you been in accident? Do you still have limitations? Perhaps there are other areas contributing to your disability.
