Fresno State plant science junior Gurbinder Kang has worked with faculty Dr. Ranjit Riar on cotton plant research testing the effects of adding gibberellic acid under different soil salinity levels. In their first research trial last year, they studied 27 cotton plants grown in plots that had different amounts of saltwater added (to simulate potential soil conditions that farmers might face in parts of the Central Valley). In some of those saline pots, they added gibberelli...c acid, a naturally occurring hormone that can also be added as a growth-regulating chemical. Preliminary research showed that it increased plant height and helped plants overcome some of the adverse effects of the salts. Chlorophyll content in the leaves of the plants, which can also show the effect of salt on plant health and growth, was also measured throughout different growth stages. Further tests will try to determine the amount of salts that stayed in the soil versus the plants at the end of the sixmonth growing period.
Fresno State agricultural education senior Amber Layne had a busy first year back in the Central Valley as a junior in 2019-20 after getting her associate's degree from Northern Oklahoma College in agricultural science. Learn more about her & about her summer internship at Superior Farms, a nationally-respected livestock company committed to sustainability & innovation, in this interview ( http://bit.ly/FS20-JC-amber-layne ).
