"Shrinkage" is a misnomer. It implies that something's wrong, adverse or undesirable about our kinky/coily/curly/wavy hair. It also suggests that you woke up one morning and somehow, your long, straight tresses had mysteriously decreased in length! As a professional Hair Caregiver, I know negativity isn't my clients' intention when they say things like, "When my hair gets longer, I'll feel more comfortable wearing it natural." Or, before we get to the shampoo bowl, " I have s...o much shrinkage!" Well, the truth for most of us melanin-rich girls is, YOUR HAIR WASN'T DESIGNED TO BE STRAIGHT. It's also true that the more you wear your natural curls, the tighter and more coiled they become, they're healthy. And THAT -- healthy hair -- SHOULD be our main goal. Why is proving that we really do have "long hair" so important to so many of us? Why is stretching and pulling your hair out farther than its natural state considered prettier and more preferable? Why isn't the packed-down, springy, tight-but-it's-right way that most of our hair generally behaves ENOUGH? Consider that we need both nails (which are straight) and screws (which are coiled) to build things. In other words, they're both invaluable tools and they're not to be compared. In the same vein, a piece of clothing you've just pulled out of the washer isn't "new," just because it looks darker in color. No, it's simply wet; once you dry it, what it TRULY looks like will become evident...and that's when it's actually most useful to you, too. If that makes any sense to you, then let's agree to fully embrace and enjoy the uniqueness of our hair AS IT IS. Also known as THE WAY IT GROWS, while taking care to properly style and maintain its health, of course. Just so you know, it was intentionally designed that way, with its twists, turns and curves. And it's perfectly fine to straighten out all those crinkles when you're in the mood, with heat, or stretch it twist, braids and buns don't get me wrong.
