One of our Principals, Eric Lehmkuhl, recently joined EMI for a trip to Chile to master plan a camp for families and children. The team of 12 consisted of architects, a landscape designer, a surveyor, and structural, mechanical, electrical, and civil engineers. The team came from Canada, the United States, and Mexico. In one intense week of design, a camp was master planned and schematic engineering documents were produced for the beautiful site pictured here.

On Tuesday, June 18th KPFF was honored to receive the SEAOSD 2019 Excellence in Structural Engineering Award for our work on the Pechanga Hotel and Resort Expansion. The award-winning expansion project, designed by Delawie and built by Tutor Perini Building Company, welcomes guests through a lobby with a 34-foot glass wall and roof to a two-tiered, 14-story hotel tower, doubling the capacity of the hotel. Inside, the expansion boasts a 40,000-sf ballroom called The Summit, ...a rooftop garden, and The Cove a separate 25,000-sf stand-alone day spa and pool complex. The Cove provides a swim-up bar, water slides, and a restaurant, taking the already-notable Pechanga to the next level in luxury, entertainment, and relaxation. Please enjoy scrolling through some pictures of this award-winning facility! We are proud of this project and the KPFF team who worked on it. This award officially recognizes KPFF as among The Best of the Best and a model of structural engineering excellence to our peers. See more

KPFF had the honor of working with RNT Architects to bring the beautiful Borrego Springs Library and Park to life. The new 13,500-sf library was designed to meet LEED Gold standards and to achieve Zero Net Energy. Enjoy this amazing video by Bread Truck Films, capturing the finished project.

Our Principal, Eric Lehmkuhl took an incredible volunteer trip to Malawi, Africa in order to assist with the master planning, assessment of facilities, and future expansion of the CURE hospital in Blantyre, Malawi! Here is a great article about that trip and the volunteer effort: https://csengineermag.com/arti/master-planning-in-malawi-2/

Have you ever thought of living in New York City? Well you don’t have to go that far, nor give up the great San Diego weather to experience a taste of it. Just check out one of KPFF’s latest projects, Eighteen Ten State Street Apartments. This great project, located on one of the last remaining developable sites in the urban neighborhood of Little Italy, sits atop the highest elevation the neighborhood has to offer and with its floor-to-ceiling windows, provides unobstructed views of the San Diego Bay and city skyline. The nearby shopping and dining options, art galleries, and park can give you a taste of that New York City style.

The new San Diego Zoo Mesa Bridge is the realization of a master planning dream to connect the two separate mesas of the San Diego Zoo for its 3.2 million annual visitors. KPFF designed the 400’ long bridge to span over the sensitive Giant Pandas exhibit and leave the mature tree canopy untouched.

We are happy to announce the promotion of two new Associates here in KPFF’s San Diego office: Colin McDonald, S.E. and Shaun Walters, S.E. Colin first joined KPFF in 2006 and has a total of 11 years of experience as a structural engineer. Prior to joining KPFF, Colin interned with construction companies and it shows. After joining KPFF, he hit the ground running and while managing healthcare projects for Kaiser, he also developed a large portfolio of work with Tesla. We a...re happy to add Colin to our group of Associates. In the seven years Shaun has been in our office, he has consistently elevated our game, both in terms of technical expertise and project management. Shaun has shown a passion for the profession and his career by independently becoming a subject matter expert in technical areas such as wind tunnel testing, solar panel support structures, and performance based design of concrete structures. He has developed and maintained important clients over the past several years, while helping our young talent to follow in his footsteps. We are honored to have Shaun join our group of Associates.
