What is a woman to you? To me a woman is the intersection of strength and kindness. Being tough yet gentle, being beautiful inside and out. As a middle aged woman I am wise yet humble because despite all the wisdom I have amassed through decades of experience, I am smart enough to know that there are many who are far wiser than I am in many ways. I believe that wisdom is a continuum to be received and then shared with others. Never hoard or keep wisdom to yourself. I am secu...re and proud of my successes, yet I am still hungry for more personal growth. Taking risks and embarking on new adventures is part of my MO. I will never rest on my laurels. Thinking outside the box, and embarking on my next chapter before I am completely ready is what has contributed to me pivoting and reinventing myself over and over. By not setting limits for yourself you will continue to peak over and over. Above all, I am grateful for all the wonderful things that come with being a woman. Being a single mom I sometimes feel l that I need to provide both what a mother and father give their children. But the same way that a father cannot truly be a mother, a mother cannot truly be a father. So I strive to be the best parent that I can be. I have often been the only woman in the dugout, coaching on the field, or in the locker room of an NHL team, but I have never considered myself to be a feminist or a woman’s libber. I am just trying to be a good human being to provide as rich a childhood for my son as possible while being a strong role model. This also goes for being woman. I will never try nor want to be like a man. Being a woman fulfills me. Every day I simply try to be the best person that I can be whether it is male or female, young or old. How important is your vision? If you work on a computer screen, if you need to see clearly to drive, if you want to be good at sports, and if you want to see all the beauty that life has to offer, for God’s sake, get your eyes examined regularly. When was the last time that you went in for an eye exam? If your eyes are important to you, get them checked at least once a year, it’s that simple. Eye exams are a very important part of our overall health. Both adults and children ...need to get their eyes examined regularly to make sure your eyes are healthy, and that your vision is supporting your lifestyle. Vision plays a critical role in the learning and development for both our educational and professional careers. Through eye exams we can detect many vision threatening diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, or diabetic retinopathy. These diseases can affect our everyday performance both in school and at work, so the sooner we catch them, the better the treatment options to protect your previous vision and eyes. I didn’t know that I had glaucoma until I started to lose some peripheral vision. Glaucoma usually doesn’t hurt or cause pain which is why it’s almost impossible for us to know that we have glaucoma until it progresses enough to affect our vision. Thankfully my case was detected before losing all my vision. This is why I always encourage my patients to come see me at least once a year. You might have been ok last year, but that doesn’t mean that you’re ok this year. I’m not trying to scare you, but that’s just how eye diseases can happen. One of the most common questions that I get from my patients is How can I keep my eyes from aging? My answer is, You can slow down the aging of your eyes the same ways that you can slow down the aging process for your whole body. Much of your health is affected by living a healthy lifestyle. Eating clean, staying physically active, and stress management all benefit your mind, body and eyes! Age really is just a number. For example, you can be 40 years old and have the ...body of a 20 year old. But you can also be 20 years old with the body of a 40 year old! As an integrative and holistic optometrist I have seen how the quality of my patients’ vision really comes down to how well they take care of themselves. The quality of your vision is strongly dependent on how well you eat, exercise, manage stress, and how well you take care of your eyes especially if you’re on a computer or mobile phone screen more than two hours a day. Ask yourself, Am I eating enough fruits and vegetables?, Am I exercising enough?, Am I protecting my eyes from blue light? If you said no to any of these questions then it's time for you to make some changes. Moving forward include a few veggies with every meal, and substitute any artificially sweetened desserts with naturally sweetened fruits. After you eat, don't go straight to the couch. Instead, go out for a walk and enjoy the natural sunlight for a few minutes. There’s a solution to everything. Age doesn’t have to define how you and your eyes feel. At the end of the day you’re the one in control of your life.

Life is what you make it! What you get out of life is what you put into it, and that applies to your mindset and how you take care of yourself. It’s never too late to develop good habits for a healthy lifestyle. Living your best life includes physical fitness and healthy eating, but above all is you need a strong mindset. Here’s what works for me to feel better in mid-life than I did when I was in my 20’s and 30’s.... Set goals: You’re never too young or old to start something new! If you are one of those people that think that age matters, just look at our last two presidents. They are both over the age of 70 and still going strong! Another example isTom Brady who started with a new football team (that had a 7 and 9 record last year, and 5 and 11 records the two previous years ) but still won the Super Bowl at the ripe old age of 43! Brady made it work because of his experience, health discipline and most importantly his mentality. I don’t let age limit me. I’m always looking to do more. When I founded NearSight I was looking for a way to make reading easier for people who need reading glasses. Fast forward to now and we are close to launching! Try psychology-backed exercises that will make you feel more confident. Body language matters! That means your body language can literally hack your brain and improve your mentality. Simple exercises such as leaning back on your chair, putting your hands on your hip, or leaning to the side against the counter or wall can have a big impact on how you feel. Stay flexible and fit. Go on a walk or jog around your local neighborhood on a daily basis or at least every other day. Try intermittent fasting. Intermittent fasting has been shown to have major benefits for aging. It promotes autophagy which is the body's way of cleaning out damaged cells, in order to regenerate newer, healthier cells. It also decreases insulin resistance and by reducing blood sugar levels. Staying healthy at every point in our life is made possible with the right mentality healthy lifestyle. Every new decade of our lives is a new challenge that we need to learn and adapt to. As long as we have the will to live, we will thrive!

Vitamin C is one of the most known vitamins out there, and rightly so. Vitamin C brings many benefits to our daily life. It protects and keeps your cells healthy, it maintains your skin looking youthful (for all my Gen X folks), it improves blood flow, and it's also great for eye health. I recommended that those over the age of 40 take at least 40mg of vitamin C a day. The reason why I recommend taking it everyday is because vitamin c cannot be stored in the body, so you need... to consume it everyday. The more you consume the better you will feel, but just keep in mind that taking too much vitamin C (up to 1000mg) can also cause you to feel stomach pain, flatulence, and even diarrhea. When it comes to consuming vitamin C you have options.There are a bunch of fruit and vegetables that you can consume. Some good sources of vitamin C include: Citrus fruits, such as oranges Peppers Strawberries Blackcurrants Broccoli Brussel Sprouts Potatoes If you want an extra boost of vitamin C you can also take supplements. Supplements typically come with more mg per pill than any fruit or vegetable out there. Most people have made major changes in their lives this past year. Children and students are spending almost the whole day in front of the screen due to online or virtual learning activities. Adults are working from home since offices are closed, and are doing televideo meetings, such as Zoom, instead of meeting in person. Sleeping late is a risk factor that can eventually lead your children to become more nearsighted. Sleep plays a big role in both mental and physical health, so it’s important that we all get a full night's sleep, especially kids. As our children grow up, they tend to develop habits that are similar to ours. This is why it’s important to set healthy habits, such as going to bed early. According to new research, myopia, or nearsightedness, is an eye problem that is more likely ...to show up in children who are late sleepers. Myopia is one of the most common vision problems in childhood. About 9% of children and teens between the ages of 5-17 suffer from myopia. With so many distractions out there, it's no wonder that our kids can’t fall asleep early. I recommend reading books instead of computers before bedtime. Reading allows your muscles to relax and slows down your breathing, leaving you feeling calmer and ready to sleep. It’s been said that 39% of people that read right before bedtime sleep better than those who don’t. Now imagine pairing a good read with a comfy mattress. I recommend @sitnesleepmattress. Growing old while being healthy is like having your cake and eating it too! There are so many benefits of growing up such as financial freedom and peace of mind. I have benefited greatly from years of experience, both wins and losses that that have taught me so much. I am more creative, a better decision maker, and I can solve problems much better than I could when I was younger. I am much more relaxed, and even though I am still an overachiever with a Type A personality, I a...m much more at peace with myself and the things in the world that I cannot change (see the Serenity prayer below). What’s my secret? Maintaining a healthy lifestyle that slows down aging both inside and outside my mind and body. The other big factor is having discipline, and the desire to achieve. Your eyes don’t lie about your age. 50 is the new 30 because you don’t look your age, but it’s almost impossible to avoid not seeing your age. When you reach your mid-40’s most of us start straining to see close up. This is called PRESBYOPIA which is due to a natural maturation of your eyes. The lens stiffens, gets cloudy over time, and the focusing muscles get weaker which affects your ability to zoom in and out to change focus especially to see things at near. Vice President Pence had a pink eye during the debate two weeks ago. This caught the attention of many people because it was around the time that President Trump had COVID-19, and pink eye is known to be one of the symptoms of COVID-19. Pink Eye, also known as conjunctivitis, is an infection that affects the mucous membrane of your eye including the exposed white tissue. When the small blood vessels in the eye become inflamed, they're more visible, which then causes your ey...es to appear pink. Since Pink Eye is a symptom of COVID-19, people were concerned that Pence had pink eye since the coronavirus has already reached the White House. Typically, pink eye is caused by a bacterial infection, allergies, or virus such as the coronavirus. Thankfully, what seemed to be a pink eye was just a false alarm given that Pence tested multiple times for COVID-19, and came out negative every single time. Tips to avoid getting an eye infection especially while COVID-19 is still out there include: Washing/sanitizing your hands after being out in public.
