In a year filled with shutdowns, the surf just kept on going.

Catching up with Mel after a(nother) all-day Maverick's session.
Going backside at a place like Maverick’s is obviously not easy. Duhsurfing there in general isn’t. But going backside adds another element of difficulty to an already tricky wave. That’s not to say there aren’t a handful of chargers who don’t huck it over the ledge like the best of ’em, thoughright foot forward be damed. Here’s a few of those from today, kicking it off with Manny Resano’s crazy tube, followed by John Mel taking after his pops, and Luca Padua showing his local knowledge. This just in from Maverick's...that’s Mr. Grant Twiggy Baker with a goliath, Jay Moriarity-esque drop from a few moments ago. Not to worry, though Twig was fine. And word is that Jamie Mitchell took a spill, too, which dragged him in through the rocks. Again, he was okay. Things are heating up out there, and it sounds like crews are starting to swap their big-wave guns for tow boards. Stay tuned to our realtime Swell Alert; there will certainly be more to comehttp://surfl.in/2LweKIz : Audrey Lambidakis

Some shaper’s boards can become synonymous with a break. With an entire town. With an era in time. Brewer and Sunset Beach. Mayhem and San Clemente. Merrick and Santa Barbara. Pearson Arrow and Mav’s. Indeed, the visionary craftsman behind the latter, Bob Pearson, has built surfboards for a fistful of decades now, but most notably, his big wave guns (and unmistakable logo) were beneath the feet of surfers changing the world at Maverick’s through the ’90s and into today. In this very special, newest episode of the Late Drop, Jamie Mitchell (who, yeah, rides the man’s boards) sits down with Bob Pearson to talk about what slides down a giant slab like Mav’s correctly. Mav’s is on and slated to get bigger all day. Here’s Twiggy on a warmup one from a few minutes ago. Check back throughout the day for updates and/or just put the Mav’s cam on your TV. (Or just go surfing!) http://surfl.in/2LweKIz : Audrey Lambidakis
