This old saying pays tribute to those who came before you, ancestors of Tahiti who paved the way, paying tribute to the myths and legends of Tahiti. When you lift your eyes to the mountains of Polynesia, you’re dancing from the right place, a place o...f humility and respect for the culture. At Hiva Katoa we always provide a TUMU PARAU (theme) for our students when performing a solo. A tumu parau backed by Polynesian concept that our students can learn, take home and immerse themselves in, and share. We all need to remember that dance has greater meaning than the technical aspect. Our dances are meant to tell stories, it was a way to keep record of the past, our history, to evoke emotion and share. Last night, we received news of a great leader in our Polynesian Community who left this Earthly world to be with our Heavenly Father. Uncle Alex Mapuhi Tekurio was the leader of the group Hitia O Te Ra, and was a mentor to many including Hiva Katoa’s director Noa Napoleon, who has many fond memories of him growing up. We will miss our time spent with him at Hura Tahiti, that vibrant smile and loving vibe when we are in his presence.
