The Family of Vern James Nelson, 89, USN, has invited the Patriot Guard Riders to attend the Military Honors of their loved one as he makes his final journey. It is our honor to do so. Vern proudly served with the USN during the Korean Conflict from 05 March 1951 to 16 February 1955 and was Honorably Discharged as a Yeoman (E-3). He was stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, during the Korean conflict. He was awarded the National Defense Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Vern was... born 31 October 1931 and passed away 02 March 2021. He was married to his wife Anne for 60 years. They raised 9 children: from oldest to youngest: Vern Patrick Nelson, Sheila Dodd, Colleen Coffey, John Nelson, Michael Nelson (deceased), Daniel Nelson, Christina Catalano, Kiera Schlechner and Terence Nelson. They have 17 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. After his military service he worked for Southern California Edison and retired from there. Throughout his lifetime he was a strong supporter of All Veterans and the Boy Scouts of America. He was very proud of his honorable military service. He was an extremely hard worker, often holding multiple jobs to feed his Family and to support their children to attend the best Catholic schools. Vern also loved boating and would take his grandchildren to cruises around the local harbor. Commander Robert McClish We are entering the last quarter of 2020. It has been a challenging year for all of us and yet we have all been able to adapt and overcome these trying times during Covid-19. ... Showing our appreciation to America’s veterans is espe- cially important this year because of Covid-19. We have been getting more and more request for financial assistance. Our post has been able to help with the following requests: Hotel vouchers, hous- ing assistance, car repair assistance and vehicle registration, utilities as- sistance, gas cards and food cards to list a few. American Legion Huntington Beach Post 133 will be focusing on providing more information to assist with veterans and their dependents in obtaining VA benefits. This can be done by contacting the Post Service Officer. The American Legion’s post service officer (PSO) is a volunteer position within an individual post. A PSO serves as a link between the veteran or dependent and a representative holding American Legion accreditation. An effective PSO understands benefits afforded to veterans and depend- ents; however, the PSO is not authorized to file any claims on behalf of the claimant. PSOs serve as valuable resources to veterans in local posts to ensure that our veterans and their dependents receive their earned benefits. Each PSO should have readily available the contact information for vari- ous resources in their local area that could be beneficial to veterans and their dependents. Services that are provided include points of contacts in your local area, information on disability benefits, pension benefits, and surviving spouse benefits. Links will be available on our website starting January 1, 2021 to assist in accessing the information needed to apply for benefits. Our challenge for this fiscal year due to Covid-19 has been raising funds to replenish monies spent on assisting veterans during these trying months. Today I’m asking you to make a generous gift to help our local veterans in this moment of extraordinary need. Your gift of $35, $25, $40 or even more could be just the thing to turn a veteran’s life around. Please mail your gift to American Legion Post 133 , P.O. Box 133, Hun- tington Beach, CA 92648 or go to www.hbpost133.com and select Donate on the left side of the screen to make your gift. Be safe and stay healthy See more
