Take that e-book! Tablets are great for taking a bunch of titles with you wherever you go, but nothing can replace the feel of a print book in your hands, the sound of turning pages and that lovely smell. The Smithsonian magazine said this, "When museum sniffers described the book smell, they most frequently used words like 'chocolate,' 'coffee,' and 'old.' Library smellers, however, selected words like 'woody,' 'smoky' and 'earthy' from the list, and described the smell's i...ntensity and perceived pleasantness. What does the smell of a book remind you of? #CheckUsOutGBCL

It's National Library week (April 4-10) in recognition of the enormous value we receive from our libraries every day. Do you remember the name of the first book (or close to it) you ever checked out of a library and how old you were? Share the memory with us in the comments. #CheckUsOutGBCL

Happy Halloween everyone. It's a full moon out there on Halloween during a pandemic. You couldn't make this stuff up in a book. While we are talking about books, which we often do, what is your favorite horror book or story?... #CheckUsOutGBCL

The library family would like to express our gratitude to Teen Librarian Charlayne Horton, who recently retired. Charlayne was a member of the founding library board that officially formed a non-profit corporation in 2003. She developed our popular Teen section and worked with Children's Librarian Maria Dowdy to create the Kid's Korner ensuring we had quality, appealing and time-lasting books for children and young readers. ... She worked as a librarian up until she retired. She remained active with young readers throughout her tenure and was an asset to community. During her retirement, Charlayne plans to spend more time reading and she will remain a regular participant at our once a month Senior Book Break. Thank you Charlayne for so many years of dedicated work. Your commitment to our community of readers is greatly appreciated, and is a gift that will last a lifetime. Enjoy your retirement, we will miss you. "The most important asset of any library goes home at nightthe library staff" - Timothy Healy #CheckUsOutGBCL

Darlene is back with two Halloween tales for youngsters. First up is "The Halloween Cat" by Christine Ricci. This story features everyone's favorite explorer, Dora and her pal Boots who help a lost cat. Our second story for all the little goblins is called "Five Little Pumpkins" with pictures by Dan Yaccarino. It is a spirited Halloween fun, rhyming read.... Have a Happy Halloween. #CheckUsOutGBCL

We’re excited to announce that we hold our fall book sale on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24 from 8 am - 3 pm. We have cleared the event with city leadership, and we will be taking numerous precautions to ensure social distancing and a safe experience for all. With so many stuck at home during lockdown, and many unable to gain access to new books to read, we look forward to providing the community with the opportunity to stock up on reading material while enjoying the beautiful fall the... Central Coast is celebrated for. Here are the safety precautions in place to make sure that we protect our patrons and volunteers: All books have been left to sit for a minimum of three days after being received, but in most cases far longer. As always, our sale is outdoors in the open air. Even so, a maximum of eight patrons will be allowed to browse books at any one time and they must observe six feet of social distancing. Masks are required, and gloves will be provided for browsing the books. Volunteers will wear gloves and masks at all times, including during set up and any handling of the books. We are limiting the number of volunteers within the sale area to ensure social distancing and to increase safety for all. Given that Halloween is right around the corner, you can also expect some extra treats at the sale (although we promise no tricks). With all of the challenges and disruptions that 2020 has brought, we’re looking forward to being able to provide this fall tradition in Grover Beach and offer the community a chance to gather at a safe distanceand remember that we are all in this together. * Song to the tune of Celebrate. You know you want to sing it. #CheckUsOutGBCL

Don't forget our next Senior Book Break is on Tuesday. The topic is a fun one: A best-seller written the year you were born. Senior Book Break is not your typical book club. Instead of requiring everyone to read the same book, we gather for good conversation about different books, authors, and genres. Each month we read books on a theme, and discussions take us all over the literary map. If you enjoy reading, this is the book club for you. We discuss books in a casual settin...g over coffee and refreshments, and most of us leave with a new book or two on our to-read list. If you enjoy good conversations about books in a fun atmosphere, this is the group for you! Stop by, newbies are always welcomed. #CheckUsOutGBCL
