We are filled with immense sadness and anger overthe recent events harming the AAPI community, including those last week in the Atlanta area. These latest violent acts of racism and misogyny are unacceptable and have left many in our community feeling scared. At GirlVentures, we stand with the AAPI community and are committed to fighting all forms of prejudice and discrimination. Resources in support of the AAPI community include donating to @stopaapihate , registering for @ihollaback bystander intervention classes, and supporting@asianwomenleaders #stopasianhate Link to additional resources on how to fight anti-Asian violence in our bio.

Rock climbing has given me the mental freedom and physical strength that I always wanted. On the ground, I can doubt myself a lot; on the wall, I know that I'm strong enough for the next move. It's crucial that our young people feel motivated to get outside, push themselves, and trust their instincts. GirlVentures matters to me because it uses the power of the outdoors to break down the barriers we set for ourselves. -Shelley, Girls Climb On volunteer mentor... Please consider giving the gift of community this holiday season. On December 6th, just a few hours before the new shelter-in-place order issued by Governor Newsom went into effect, members of the GirlVentures’ Youth Advisory Board explored what it means to give back to the community in the time of a pandemic. For our December Day of Service, we partnered with the volunteers of the The Gardens at Lake Merritt and spent part of our day weeding, potting, and transporting dirt and compost to help with the beautification of the already lovely Garden Center. It meant a lot to each of us to spend time in the sun and in the soil just before hunkering back down in our homes for the next few weeks. When you can, we encourage everyone in their own time to visit Oakland's Lake Merritt Garden Center - to both bask in its beauty and to help preserve the space.
