Any guesses what these might be?? We harvested a couple this week from the garden! Hint: it’s a South American fruit, a perennial plant, tastes like a cross between papaya, tomato, and passion fruit....

Today’s **Tuesday Tip!** Now is the time to plant #garlic! It grows through the winter and if you’re lucky, you’ll have whole heads by the springtime. Find a good quality, organic head of garlic and separate the cloves - each one is a seed! Plant each one so the pointy tip is face up in the soil, about an inch deep. Leave plenty of space between each one to try and prevent fungal diseases. Water well for the first couple weeks so the roots get well established. We usually ha...rvest our garlic green (immature) in April or May to 1) make space for summer crops 2)pull the plant before its completely damaged by fungal disease (in this case, rust). Green garlic can be chopped and used fresh! If your plants are healthy, wait longer until the leaves die back in June for garlic bulbs to hang and dry. So easy, little maintenance, and great for small hands!

Introducing **Tuesday Tips!** Each Tuesday we’ll bring you a garden tip to help your garden thrive sustainably, based on what’s going on that season. So, here goes! In the fall you’ll see lots of aphids - tiny insects, usually in clusters, that suck the nutrient-filled liquids out of plants. They can be many different colors, including green, gray, yellow, and black. Right now we’re seeing lots of black aphids at GFE on our fava beans, onions, and chives. The best thing to ...do to control #aphids is to clear them away physically! Use your fingers or a spray bottle with water (water only - no insecticides or soaps!) to wipe them away, especially on the undersides of leaves and areas where the stem and leaves meet. Keep your eyes peeled, because the sooner you spot them the better, as their population can get out of control quickly! #aphidcontrol #organicgardening #sustainablegardening #pestmanagement

See that dot on top of the pole? It’s a hawk! Eating a rat! It swooped down to the garden yesterday for a city feast, right in front of us. A welcome reminder that we are part of a much bigger ecosystem, constantly balancing itself out.

We are so thrilled that the garden serves as a space for play, meditation, walks, relaxation, (safe) gathering, and everything in between. Open spaces like parks and gardens could not be more essential this year. As a partner of the @sfparksalliance we are happy to share our of green spaces in SF! #heartyourparks
