Game Changer Sportfishing 01.11.2020

Sorry everyone, I posted this yesterday from my phone, but it didn't save. The Bluefin was weighed in yesterday morning and the tape measurements were not accurate as we had indicated. The fish weighed in at 361 lbs. While it may not be a state record, it is definitely a record for the GC! This big Bluefin was caught on the kite and handed to our charter master, Brad, who single handedly reeled in this monster. Congrats to Brad and to his group as this was not the only nice fish caught. A couple were just over 200 lbs with the rest being in that 50 to 100+ category. All in all a great trip for all!

Boys returned this morning from another great trip. Big tuna are still biting! After two days of fishing, our anglers came home with 14 Bluefin. Four were over 200lbs, five were 130-180 and the other 5 were 60-90lbs. Thank you to pat and friends for joining the crew on a fishing trip. And not a bad first trip in the GC!!

And the Super Cows continue on the GC. Another epic trip on the GC and one filled with firsts! Thank you Bob Richey and friends for joining us once again on a GC trip. With really rough seas ahead for our group, Captain Ryan chose the path with the best of the worst seas and we headed out for Yellowtail and Dorado. The day was rough, with swells coming from both directions, the boat didn't know whether to go up and down or roll side to side, so it kind of did both. Pretty ...much everyone did not feel well at some point that day. However our group persevered and we still caught 21 decent size dorado and a couple small Yellowfin as well as some Yellowtail. Day two would prove to have all the excitement. The seas calmed way down and the sun came out. With a slight wind, it was perfect for tuna fishing. Captain Ryan found the tuna and we were successful to get some to boil throughout the day. While the kite was responsible for 5 of our tuna, we did also get some on fly line. When all was done, we caught 6 Bluefin, 5 Yellowfin, 21 Dorado and 13 Yellowtail. With the largest Bluefin weighing in at 315, the other 4 were between 80-175lbs and the Yellowfin were that nice 50-70lb range! The firsts?....How about a group of 6 that all caught there largest fish ever this trip? Not such a great first?....How about our own Hayden getting stuck in the leg by a kite hook? Note to self, NEVER handle a fresh tuna on the deck until the hook is removed! BTW - Hayden is fine! All in all, Wow! We are so stoked for our anglers and their new personal best. So glad it could be on the GC! Another note to our friend Bob U, who was not able to make this trip due to a surgery. You were missed, but your son killed it dad! See more

GC returned today from a 4 day trip with our friend Bobby G and company. Armed with their own flyers, kites and helium there was no way this trip would be anything be successful. Captain Ryan got them on the fish and our anglers returned home with 30 large fish! One 60 lb yellowfin, one 330 lb BF, two at 220 and 215 and another 26 BF between 120 and 180. Special note of thanks to our anglers for catching the GC's first super cow of the season!! Thanks Bobby G for another fun trip with your group. You guys are all about the fishing. We love it!

BIG BLUEFIN DO NOT DISAPPOINT! Thanks to our newest anglers Charles, his wife and friends, for joining the GC crew on a 2 day trip that just returned yesterday morning. First day was mostly travel as the group headed out to try their luck at big Bluefin fishing. Second day would prove that their luck would hit a jackpot! By 8:30 am the group had one over 200lbs and 3 over 100lbs already on the boat. For most that would be a great day as is. This group ended their day with a total of 13 fish, 4 over 200lbs and 8 well over 100lbs. Check out the official weight from the scales! Well done team Charles!

Big fish are biting! After a lull at the fishing grounds, the bigger fish are now hungry. GC returned Saturday AM after a two day trip with a new group of anglers. They not only caught some nice Bluefin, but the larger Yellowfin also bit. Our anglers came home with some Yellowfin in that 50-65lb range.

And the winner of most fun trip on a GC trip 2020.......the Robert and Mike family boys 2.5 day trip that just returned a few days ago. We had the pleasure of hosting 3 dads and their sons, with the oldest dad being 80 and all anglers from the same family. What made this trip fun for all, was that this group came prepared to have the fun. With wads of $1 dollar bills in hand, the crew and I had to wonder where they had been prior to arrival! No, the bills were for the end...less games/bets that were ongoing throughout the trip. Piss off the captain or crew?...$1. Get told NOT to do something...$1. Hook up and lose a fish...swing and a miss would cost you as well! This lead to endless ribbing, constant calling someone out and laughter that, with this kind of fun, could only result in a great fishing trip. And so it did. In one day, we caught 2 day limits of some really nice Bluefin. All in that 40-55lb range, with one weighing 80lbs that was caught at night with a flat fall. Day two was much slower as we went out on the hunt for YT and Dodos. We did catch a few of those as well. What was really impressive, was that these anglers came from the east coast and had never fished San Diego waters before. One of our anglers, Lon, who had never caught a tuna, was probably the most focused and determined. This paid off as he caught several, including a couple at night. Needless to say....yep....we had our next angler that had to join the First Tuna ranks of "eating the heart"! Besides the fishing, when asked to make sushi with one of the tuna, Chef Joshua did so and ended up with all our guests intently watching as it turned in to a sushi making class! To this great group of guys, the crew thanks you for all the fun we had! And for the stack of $1 bills that ended up in the crew tips! LOL T

Sometimes we are reminded that fishing is just that. Fishing....not catching. Whether it was the full moon, flat calm waters or just tuna being darned tuna, it was a tough trip. We returned home yesterday morning from a 3 day trip North to San Clemente islands. First day was patty stops on the way north. Lots of nice size patties, but no-one home. Day two and three were spent looking for tuna. With too flat calm seas and no wind to fly a kite, it was all fly line and f...lat falls that would need to catch these fish. While Captain Ryan put us on many breezers, these ever illusive tuna would sink and not bite. We had a really fun group, who for most, this would be their first fish caught. Luckily, all was not lost as we did catch 3 nice tuna. And the 3 caught were by those that had not ever caught one before, including 10 year old Jorge! This young man fought his fish by himself and got it successfully to the boat. a nice 35lb bluefin. Shane, had never been fishing and he hooked, reeled and caught a nice 45lb Yellowfin! Congrats Jorge and Shane. We are so excited for you both! See more

GC returned this morning from a 2.5 day trip with our friend, Kevin and 3 of his friends. You know it's going to be a good day when you wake up and catch 36 Bluefin in that 40-80lb range by noon! Day two was Cortez where our group landed some nice Yellowtail as well as these 2 really nice size Sheep's head!

GC crew returned Friday morning having hosted 3 couples, some of which had not ever deep sea fished. Luckily the weather and seas were really nice for our trip. While our Chef Joshua impressed the group with his amazing cooking, our anglers enjoyed some good fishing as well. Our first stop was to Cortez for some Yellowtail. And Yellowtail we did catch. Lots of fun for all and the fish were that nice 15-25lb range. Just when some thought that would be their biggest fish e...ver caught, we stopped on a sonar school of Bluefin. one of our guests, David, was on fire and hooked up a BF on a flatfall. He quickly learned that a 20lb Yellowtail would NOT big his biggest fish! The 140lb tuna that he would fight and exert extreme cardio over, would in fact, be his new biggest fish ever caught! With some on the kite and more on a flat fall, and some sadly lost, we did end up with 3 really nice fish from 140-180lbs. As is tradition, our one angler who reeled in his first tuna, was given the honorary task of eating the tuna's heart. Note Miss Aluah also getting in the mix during fishing and anxiously awaits dad to gaff a fish! On our last day of fishing, with limited time before having to head home, we did catch one of those 3 BF and then......along came a Mako! He hit the flying fish on the kite. One of our guests reeled it in all the way to the boat. After a long battle, as everyone looked at the size of this Mako, the crew prepared to gaff it. Let's just say, we were not prepared for the mighty strength and determination of this fish. Captain Ryan gaffed it in the head and before our 2 other crew could get a gaff in to it, it did a death roll all the way around and snapped the gaff as it swam away with the the gaff still in it. While we were all disappointed to not be able to land the shark, it was quite an experience to come that close to it! There is always NEXT TIME! See more

Thank you to our regulars, Rob Boli, Armando and friends. We had another fun, 2 day trip that ended last Sunday evening with our group bringing home a mixed bag of great fish. Considering this group got handed one of mother nature's more angrier weekend weather, this group hung in there and managed to catch 51 Dorado, 15 Yellowfin and 10 Yellowtail! Check out the youngest in the group, Armando Junior, showing the adults how its done. Also a special shout out to the only lady angler on the boat, that hung in there like a champ and caught some fish of her own! Then there is Captain Ryan, also joining in on the fun with a nice size Dodo! Well done everyone!
