It’s Spring! And after a long winter, folks are getting out and enjoying the weather. Arbor Day is April 30 this year. Henry Red Cloud, who is Oglala Lakota, will be planting 35,000 trees on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota with his team. John Tahsuda III has worked as the staff director for the Senate Indian Affairs Committee and he’s served as a principal deputy assistant secretary for Indian Affairs. Today he talks about the new administration's changes to land into trust. Many people may not realize that Alaska is home to 229 tribes. And there’s a move right now to get the state to formally recognize them. Joaqlin Estus is our national correspondent based in Anchorage and she joins us to tell us more about this effort.

BREAKING The CDC has updated its mask guidance as of today. If you're vaccinated against COVID, you no longer need to wear masks outdoors during most activities. CDC Director Rochelle Walensky on April 27 announced in a live stream that it is safe for those who are fully vaccinated to remove their masks in small outdoor settings. People no longer need to wear masks while walking, running, hiking, or biking alone, with members of their household, or if they attend small outdoor gatherings. Additionally, the agency did say that you still need to wear masks inside and at crowded outdoor events. More info at https://youtu.be/n5AcDyf6xB8?t=2275 [Skip to 37:55 to hear CDC Director]
Holly Cook Macarro, a partner at Spirit Rock Consulting, is a familiar face. She’s a regular contributor to Indian Country Today explaining what’s going on in Washington. There’s the Dakota Access Pipeline and the Keystone XL Pipeline and thousand of other pipelines criss-crossing North America. One that’s particularly important is Line 3. Enbridge is building the 334-mile long oil pipeline across Northern Minnesota. Called Line 3, it’s part of the company's huge Mainline pipeline system and will carry 760,000 barrels of oil per day, including tar sands oil, from Alberta, Canada to Superior, Wisconsin.
As the story goes, a long time ago there were no celestial light sources and people lived in darkness. Raven heard of a chieftain who owned a private collection of stars, the moon, and the sun, so he set about trying to steal the treasure to bring light to humanity.

Twenty years ago, U.S. Mint released a $1 coin dedicated to Sacajawea. On Thursday we sat down with Shoshone-Bannock citizen Randy'L Teton, the Sacajawea model on the coin. Teton explained the different spellings of Sacajawea. This historic figure is spelled and pronounced differently by many tribes. For example, The Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation spell her name with a "K." Sacajawea was Lemhi Shoshone and the tribe spell it with a "J" and when U.S. Mint made the coin, it split the difference and used a "G." Indian Country Today's Reporter-Producer Aliyah Chavez is also on the newscast with some of the campaign trail stories she's been working on for more than a year.
