Michael Morgan Oakland Symphony One of my favorite parts about posting local heroes everyday during Black History Month is knowing that Bay Area youth are getting to see what is possible and knowing that greatness is within their reach. Today's local Black History Month hero is someone that I have admired for quite some time and can confidently say he is a true inspiration to youth of the Bay Area and beyond.... Maestro Michael Morgan shattered the misconception that only older white men conducted symphony orchestras at the young age of 12. Maestro Morgan attended public school in D.C., was affiliated with the D.C. Youth Orchestra Program, and a student at Oberlin College-Conservatory of Music. In 1986, he was invited by Leonard Bernstein to make his debut with the New York Philharmonic. Maestro Morgan has served as the Assistant Conductor of the Chicago Symphony and has served as a guest conductor with most of America's major orchestras, as well as the New York City Opera, St Louis Opera Theater, and Washington National Opera. Maestro Morgan works with youth throughout the Bay Area and nation and can be found in local schools throughout the school year. Thank you Maestro Michael Morgan for allowing youth to see that stereotypes are just that...stereotypes. #BlackConductors #BlackHistoryIsAmericanHistory #BreakingSterotypes To learn more about Maestro Morgan and the Oakland Symphony, click here. www.oaklandsymphony.org/artist/michael-morgan/

It is difficult to think about East Palo Alto without considering the impact That Robert "Bob" Hoover has made on the community. That is why today's Black History Month post is dedicated to Bob Hoover. For more than 50 years Bob Hoover has been giving back to his community and the lives that have been touched are countless. When Bob came to the Bay Area to attend grad school at Stanford he was not allowed to buy a house in Palo Alto due to the color of his skin. He ended up ...buying a home in East Palo Alto and from that moment on he created lasting change in the lives of countless youth and adults through his prison reentry program and the Robert Hoover East Palo Alto Junior Golf Club. Bob has a way of showing youth and adults alike the connection between education and real life. WeHOPE Founder Pastor Bains stated "Bob Hoover has always been a pillar in the community. He assumed the mantle when it came to addressing systemic change long before it was popular. Because of his leadership, insight and wisdom, organizations like WeHOPE can affect positive change in the lives of the marginalized throughout the Bay Area. Thank you, Bob!" For as little as $25, you can provide a hot Thanksgiving Day meal AND a week’s worth of groceries to a neighbor in need! We have all experienced a great deal of fear and uncertainty over this past year and the new normal seems to have taken away all the joyful things we look forward to throughout the year. Thanksgiving will look a lot different than it has in years past and families throughout California are adjusting their plans to accommodate the Governor’s orders. Organi...zations that serve the hungry and vulnerable are having to rethink how they will feed their neighbors in need while adhering to CDC guidelines. Not an easy task! Always up for a challenge, the innovative minds at WeHOPE joined forces with one of Silicon Valley’s leading tech companies to create a plan that will feed 500 of our neighbors living in vehicles and encampments throughout the Bay Area. 500 HOT traditional thanksgiving meals will be prepared, packaged, and delivered to encampments and safe parking programs throughout the Bay Area thanks to the use of the commercial kitchen and chefs provided by the generous tech company (they would prefer to stay anonymous). WeHOPE drivers will pick up meals and deliver them along with a week’s worth of nonperishable items to keep your neighbors fed and healthy. Please consider supporting WeHOPE’s efforts to feed our neighbors in need and make this Thanksgiving one of HOPE. Donate today and provide hope for tomorrow https://wehope.org/get-involved/donate text "DIGNITY to 56512" or Share #BayArea #Hope #holidays

Great News for the San Jose project creating a model for housing for the homeless during the pandemic. Thanks to Mayor Sam Liccardo, Gov Gavin Newsom, and everyone else involved in bringing together the protections shielding our vulnerable community members from homelessness! #BayArea #HousingForAll https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=269030397778212

Behind the eyes of every person living without a home is a story. The journey to homelessness is unique to each person who experiences it and only by hearing their stories can we better address their needs and put them on their journey of hope. Mary currently resides in an encampment in San Jose. Her current home is a tent. Mary told me that people make assumptions about her and how she became homeless every day. They assume that she is lazy, that she does not want to work, ...and that she must be on drugs to have gotten into her current situation. All those assumptions are just that, assumptions. A few short years ago Mary had a home of her own, a career as a nurse, and a healthy son living his life to the fullest. All of that changed in an instant. Mary’s son got ill, and she had to take a leave of absence from work to take care of him. When her son’s illness continued beyond the time she had accumulated at her place of employment, she lost her job. From there, things just got worse. When Mary lost her home, her son went to stay with friends to recuperate and she started living out of her car. She has been out of work for some time now and is living in an encampment. Without stable housing, Mary is finding it difficult to find full-time employment. WeHOPE provides mobile showers/laundry and comprehensive case management to the residents of the encampment Mary calls home and is working with her to address her immediate and long-term needs. WeHOPE recently assisted Mary in obtaining a housing voucher and is helping in her search for a new home and permanent full-time employment. By listening to Mary’s story and hearing her struggles, WeHOPE was able to develop a case plan that addressed her unique needs. Mary's journey with homelessness is coming to an end. Her new journey is a journey of hope. Join us today and help someone like Mary begin their journey of hope! Donate at https://www.wehope.org/covid-19-emergency-response

"This will end because I won't give up." Jen, Mobile Homeless Service Client - Oakland It is not a question of wanting to work. Many of our homeless brothers and sisters already have two jobs, while living in a tent. ... Two jobs are necessary to rent a $2,200 studio apartment in the Bay Area. Three jobs if you include food, utilities, transportation, and other basic needs. First, last and security deposit, good credit, a permanent address, two or more references... WeHOPE works on breaking the hopeless cycle. Give today and you can provide hope for tomorrow https://www.wehope.org/covid-19-emergency-response
