What happens to our food waste when we throw it away in the trash? It goes to the landfill where it emits VOC's that contribute to climate change. Isn't there a better way? Yes, let's compost! Learn about Composting in this fun video created by Explore Ecology Garden Educator Amanda.

Our Garden Educators created these fun Grab and Go Kits to give to students in our School Gardens Program. Each kit contains seeds and soil so kids can grow veggies and flowers at home! All they need is a container (egg cartons and toilet or paper towel rolls work well) and some sunshine! Spritz seeds with a little water and their mini garden is ready to grow. This is a super fun project that our hardworking Garden Educators came up with. So much fun and educational, too! How many students who receive these will grow up to be future gardeners or farmers?

Our Beach Cleanup for this Sunday, January 10th has been cancelled due to COVID. We’ll miss you! But, there’s still lots of trash to pick up. Unfortunately there’s enough litter for everyone! If you feel inspired and can do so safely, you could do a neighborhood or beach cleanup on your own. Here are some guidelines: Be sure to mask up, socially distance, wash your hands, (preferably wear gloves), and only do the cleanup with members of your household. Don’t pick up anything... that’s sharp or dangerous or part of nature like feathers, seaweed, and leaves. You can keep track of your items and report your data using the Clean Swell app. Data from Clean Swell helps researchers understand ocean litter and create legislation to curb marine debris. A Clean Swell how to video is linked in our bio. Thank you, be safe, and we can’t wait to see you soon. See more

Who's ready for the new year? Although 2020 held challenges for many of us, Explore Ecology continued to do what we do best- educating the next generation of environmental stewards! We moved our programs online and offered a wide variety of field trips and lessons virtually. Our environmental educators worked with 12,996 students, teaching them about healthy watersheds, food waste, composting, waste reduction, and environmental education! ... 18 classes were part of our Flows to the Ocean program- that’s about 426 students who learned how to be better ocean stewards. We want to give a special shoutout to our Environmental Educators who work tirelessly and now virtually to ensure that Santa Barbara County youth receive the very best in environmental education. Happy New Year, Everyone! We think the future looks bright. Here's to 2021- we hope it will be a wonderful year for us all.

If your neighborhood is looking tidier, it could be the work of 4th to 6th graders who are part of our Flows to the Ocean program. Offered by Explore Ecology and funded by NOAA, the City and County of Santa Barbara, and City of Goleta, Flows to the Ocean focuses on watersheds, water quality, and preventing ocean pollution. Students participating in the program will perform three neighborhood cleanups as homework. For their important work, our Environmental Education team crea...ted reusable cleanup kits for over 400 students. The kits include a bucket with cleanup instructions, reusable gloves, hand sanitizer, a mini clipboard, and trash tally sheets so these amazing kids can keep track of what they find. Students participating in the program who conduct three trash cleanups (including submitting their trash data) will receive an adult-child combo ticket for a free Condor Express whale watching boat trip! Some of you may know Bennett Rock, Explore Ecology School Garden Coordinator. Mr. Rock, as students call him, is shown here with some of the bountiful harvest from one of the many school gardens we're lucky enough to work in. Even during COVID, our School Gardens Program thrived. Garden Educators like Bennett gave away lots of fresh, free produce to school families. They created Grab and Go Kits complete with seeds and soil that children can take home and plant. ... Gardens were tended and kept healthy all year and were the site for lots of creative videos that were used in classrooms and lessons. Take a look at some of them on our website and YouTube channel. We appreciate all of our Garden Coordinators and Educators. If you can, get outside and enjoy nature this weekend! It doesn't matter where you go- your patio, deck, yard, the beach, a park. Spending time outside is uplifting, contributes to a sense of well-being, and is free! Studies show that even being near a window with views of trees or the outdoors is beneficial for our health. With our stay at home order, just make sure that your outdoor time is safe. Be sure to wear your mask and social distance.

Thanks to Garden Educator Chris K for this great shot of a happy and busy bee straight from a school garden. Our gardens wouldn't be as productive without all of the help that pollinators and other beneficial insects give us! We're feeling a lot of gratitude for these creatures, those in the air and also in the soil. Without them, plants wouldn't be as healthy or abundant. "Pest" insects also provide valuable lessons- how can we handle this challenge organically? We're al...so thankful for the many little green thumbs who we get to work with. May the new year bring us all together again safely in person to tend and grow school gardens! We wish you a Happy Holiday Season.

The environmental education team has been busy putting together over 400 cleanup kits to go out to local students who will be cleaning up their neighborhoods. Angie shows you what goes into these kits and how to make your own cleanup kit. Get A bucket, reusable gloves and you are ready to cleanup any beach without creating additional waste. Add some hand sanitizer to keep yourself clean and safe after the clean up. Optional is a tally sheet to track what you pickup. This data... is helpful for those who are tracking trash trends and using that information to shape policy. You can choose to help with this data gathering mission by adding your cleanup data on the CleanSwell app. Don't want to keep track? Totally fine! Every piece of trash you pick up is one less thing that will end up in the ocean and it all adds up. #beachcleanup #flowstotheocean #plasticfree #conservation #saveourplanet #oceanconservation #oceanminded #respectnature #loveourplanet #oceanprotection #oceanoptimism

In America we create around %25 more waste between Thanksgiving and New Years. The holidays have a big impact on the waste we create and that means more things ending up in the landfill. One way to reduce waste? Try some different methods for wrapping gifts. Use a tea towel or fabric for a zero waste wrapping option. Brown paper saved from online orders makes perfect reuse wrapping paper. Paint or draw on some designs to add character. Maps, newspaper, or old calendars al...so are great reuse wrapping options. Add the bow on top with twine, yarn, or fabric for a plastic free option. There are so many ways to reduce waste this holiday season! Need some reuse inspiration or supplies? Each craft and project will be given cultural and historical context to give students a sense of the rich history of natural dye. Chumash plant traditions and utilization and the rich textile tradition in Mexico will be emphasized.
