On November 15, 2020, Brandon Tucker Bannowsky violently assaulted his then girlfriend by hitting and strangling her repeatedly. Thereafter, he stole her car. The victim testified at the preliminary hearing and was able to articulate every detail of the assault. Bannowsky plead to the charges of carjacking and domestic violence with a prior; he was sentenced by the Honorable Suzanne Kingsbury on February 22, 2021, to four years and four months in state prison. The victim courageously appeared at sentencing with DDA Kassie Cardullo, her friend, and her victim advocate, Shannon. More importantly, she was able to confront her abuser by reading a powerful, heart-felt victim impact statement.

Victim advocates act as a bridge between victims and the criminal justice system. Many victims have no prior knowledge of the system and feel completely lost, until they connect with an advocate. This victim was especially grateful for the support she received from her advocate in our South Lake Tahoe office. #ThankfulTuesday
