The Orange Police Department will be conducting a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on September 25, 2020, at 3100 E. Chapman, between the hours of 9:00 p.m. to 2:15 a.m. DUI Checkpoints like this one are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests. Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment, with officers checking drivers for proper licensing. The Orange Police Department reminds drivers that DUI Doesn’t Just ...Mean Booze. If you take prescription drugs, particularly those with a driving or operating machinery warning on the label, you might be impaired enough to get a DUI. Marijuana can also be impairing, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs, and can result in a DUI. On September 11, 2020, the Orange Police Department held our first DUI and license checkpoint since February. DUI and license checkpoints are primarily held for educational purposes and have shown to decrease DUI fatalities by 20 percent. The publicity from checkpoints reminds people that driving impaired is dangerous and against the law. Sobriety checkpoints help stop impaired drivers who would likely remain under the radar. During our checkpoint, we screened 485 vehicles, resulting in two DUI arrests and two arrests for other violations. One of those arrested for DUI was a 20-year-old male who possessed an unloaded/un-serialized firearm in his vehicle. He faces additional charges relating to possessing the illegal firearm. One other notable arrest at the checkpoint was a motor officer attempting to stop a vehicle which failed to yield and a vehicle pursuit ensued. The driver of that vehicle lost control of his vehicle, collided with a curb, and then fled the vehicle. He was taken into custody without incident and booked at OCJ for evading. Funding for this checkpoint is provided to the Orange Police Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. #duicheckpoint #dontdrinkanddrive #duidoesntjustmeanbooze #gosafely #orangepolicedepartment
