Foggy morning lessons are a great way to start the day! We love when young riders come for their lessons and are excited to groom and ride even if it’s a little wet and chilly out! #foggymorning #horsebackriding #ponylessons #grooming #dicksonranch #perfectpair #fortheloveofhorses #poniesofinstagram

We couldn’t have said it better! We are so happy to see how far Sorcha has come in her training program! While we miss having her all to ourselves, we know this was a great choice for her and we are excited to see how she will continue to grow! Repost from @katehaltehphoto Sorcha’s recent move to Dougherty Ranch will enable Blossom Hill to grow into a more diversified training program. With more of her beginner level training still taking place at Dickson Ranch, her progra...m at the new location will enable her to cater to a clientele seeking full performance training and care. I am so proud of Sorcha taking the next step to bridge these programs together. Blossom Hill is on track to do some exciting things in the near future and we will all be watching and rooting for the team. Grateful for the cool, foggy day here at the ranch. We have been in some serious need of a little moisture and today we finally got a break from the heat! Perfect day for spending time with the horses! #dicksonranch #foggymorning #coastalfog #marinelayer #muchneeded #octoberweather #fallvibes #autumn #cooldown #boardingfacility #horsebackriding

Hey Ranch Friends and Family, Please take a minute to check out the GoFundMe for one of our most beloved "unicorn" horses, Sahara. She may not be a ranch resident anymore as she went off to retire in Idaho but we will always love her and keep her in our thoughts. gf.me/u/y4ncrg

We know that Halloween is going to be a bit different this year with regards to Covid, but we thought it was still important to have a little spirited fun and put up some decorations. This is just a glimpse of our spooky bridge leading into the ranch. We plan to add more as Halloween gets a little closer and hope to see some other homes in the neighborhood join in on the fun! We also hope you enjoy it as much as we do and that it doesn’t scare you too much! #spookyseason #halloweendecor #halloweenbridge #dicksonranch #firstfieldfarm #tractor #festive #getinthespirit #skeleton #forthekids #enterifyoudare

One of our most beloved trainers is expanding her program and we couldn’t be more proud of and excited for her! This year has not been easy on the horse back riding world as we continue to navigate through Covid-19, wildfires, and lingering poor air quality from smoke, and yet she continues to persevere, stay positive, and grow as a business woman and trainer! We can’t wait to see where the future will take you Sorcha Dough Land and we are happy to still keep you close and in our Dickson Ranch family!

A good thing to know about Yellowjackets. We have lots of them here on the ranch too!

Today we are seeing clear air again! What a relief! Please remember though that your horse needs time to recover from being exposed to the smoke for such a long period of time! Please try to keep the work load you put on your horse light! Give your horse ample time to recover from smoke-induced airway insult. Airway damage resulting from wildfire smoke takes 4-6 weeks to heal. Ideally, plan on giving your horse that amount of time off from the time when the air quality ret...urns to normal. Attempting exercise may aggravate the condition, delay the healing process, and compromise your horse’s performance for many weeks or months. While we recognize that owners and trainers of sport horses may want to return to work sooner than 4-6 weeks, Dr. Kent Pinkerton* recommends that horses return to exercise no sooner than 2 weeks post smoke-inhalation, following the clearance of the atmosphere of all smoke. Horses, like all other mammals, tend to have an irritation to particles, but will recover from the effects within a few days. With the devastation at San Luis Rey Downs (where 46 horses died, mostly from fire or smoke inhalation), it would be wise give the horses a break from exercise and then to gradually re-introduce them back to their routine exercise. On December 10, 2017, Dr. Rick Arthur, equine medical director at the UC Davis Kenneth L. Maddy Equine Analytical Chemistry Laboratory and at the California Horse Racing Board, issued an advisory on behalf of the CHRB regarding horses at the Del Mar racetrack -recommendation from Dr. Kent Pinkerton, a professor in both the medical and veterinary medical schools at UC Davis See more

Hi Everyone. We have had lots of concern and questions about the smoke and about nebulizer treatments: Here is some advice for you. SMOKE: If the air is bad... for you it is the same for your horses. With a longer airway to clear airway debris, a horse needs a longer time to recover from poor air than we do. If the air is bad one day and good the next, don't stress their airway, give them a day or two more of rest, walking or a very light hack. Error on the side of caution. NEBULIZER: Dr. Robert does not recommend a nebulizer treatment unless directed by a veterinarian and absolutely no inhaling of essential oils or other 'treatments'. Reports of someone wanting to nebulize horses with collidal silver is especially concerning. With our horses' airways and lungs already irritated, we don't want to be putting more foreign 'over the counter' substances into them with no known benefits and most probably detriment. If your horse is having any problems, please call us! See more

If it’s unhealthy for us, it’s unhealthy for them https://equusmagazine.com/riding/air-quality(AQI%20from%20101%20to,air%20quality%20could%20trigger%20one.&text=Red%20conditions%20(AQI%20from%20151,are%20unhealthy%20for%20any%20horse.

Hey everyone, this is a current snap shot of what the air quality is right now at the ranch. If you click on the photo you can see that the quality is at a 180. Very very bad! Please remember if it’s unhealthy and unsafe for our lungs, it is also unhealthy and unsafe for horses lungs. Please try to avoid strenuous activity with your horse today and any other day that the smoke from the fires settles into the valley and creates this level of air quality index. Thanks and stay safe out there!
