The Orchard House is a rural idyll for the modern cook. It lies low in a century-old apple orchard, far from neighboring houses in Sebastopol, CA. One feature the family hoped to retain in the new home was the unified, open living space they’d enjoyed in their previous home in an industrial loft space in Manhattan, and the house had to be completely accessible to their teenage son, who gets around in a power wheelchair. Second, they needed a place that could accommodate two h...ome offices and a study area for homeschooling. Third, they needed space not just for cooking and dining dozens of guests, but for massive kitchen projects like making wine from their homegrown grapes and oil from their olive trees. Check our bio link "A Sonoma Prefab That Celebrates a Family’s Passion for Cooking on Dwell" to read the full story about the Orchard House, which was featured as the cover article in Dwell Magazine and remains a favorite project at Dwell’s online community at Dwellmag.com. We highly recommend joining the new Dwell+ subscription that provides access to a vast archive of articles and projects (including several by us!) curated from their previous issues. #dwell #dwellmagazine #Awards #Architizer #Design #DesignAward #Award #AndersonAndersonArchitecture #Architecture #AndersonAnderson #California #BIM #Revit #Rhino #Enscape #houzz #bayareaarchitecture #wallpaper #dezeen #sonoma #modern #rusticmodern #prefab #prefabrication

COVID-19, More Creative than Ever. That’s how we keep the team bonding at Anderson Anderson and we overcome this crazy time. Every Friday we host an online Creative Happy Hour for our team, where we share with each other our individual creative projects that are unrelated to our studio work together. It is fun, joyful and inspiring and keeps the great spirit of the team together, and allows us to invite in the many friends and collaborators who have been to our office at 90... Tehama Street in San Francisco, back when we were all able to get together in person! Our format is to select a theme in advance for each week, and then for everyone to bring in a presentation originating from that theme to show and share. Over the last several months we’ve built up a diverse and fascinating collection of talks and images based on word topics ranging from Ambivalence to Sousveillance, drawing strikingly diverse viewpoints and life experiences. The group consists of architects and engineers, of course, but also a fashion designer, a former opera diva, a voice coach, a literature scholar, a museum curator, artists, teachers, students, a documentary filmmaker, and several gearheads. In the next few posts, and some future sequences, we will share a small sampling of some of the highlights from our collaborative creative sessions. For all of us, creative disruption is what makes us happy and what makes us thrive, and we hope that all of you are finding your own outlets for enabling and sharing your own creative talents no matter what they may be. #andersonandersonarchitecture #pleasedontcallitasalon #dontwaitforted #makeyourowncreativespace #moreforgivingthanpechakucha #90Tehama #happyhour

We are very excited to be involved with several projects right now that are being built from CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) panels. These prefabricated carbon-capturing wood components are the construction material of the future, and are increasingly taking the place of less environmentally friendly materials like concrete and steel in larger and larger buildings, including high-rise towers. The projects we are showing here are small in size, but large in ambition--they are par...t of a series of prefabricated modular structures we are developing, some of which will be available to order and purchase this Fall from a venture-capital-backed startup that has just opened a factory in the Bay Area. The first prototype is under construction now, and will be publicly introduced soon. Until then, enjoy these selected images from the broader series of related projects, and stay tuned for more in-factory photos in the next few days. #andersonandersonarchitecture #timber #wood #construction #bayarea #factory

Blind Alley is the curbside gallery with a vanguard concept perfect for these times, designed by Anderson Anderson. It is located near Fort Worth´s Cultural District on a residential street, and features a glass wall to let you see the art when you walk by. Check our bio link "Blind Alley article on The Dallas Morning News" to read an interesting review about the mini-gallery. New exhibitions from international artists are scheduled every month. www.blindalleyprojects.com. #art #architecture #culturaldistrict

The Blind Alley gallery is constructed with a steel frame and cast concrete floor and roof slabs. The steel was prefabricated in Cam Schoepp’s sculpture studio and then installed and with connections welded on site. The concrete slabs were cast on site. The infill wall and ceiling framing is light gauge steel. The interior is sheathed in 3/4 plywood to serve as art installation backing, and finished with GWB and flat white paint. The roof clerestory projects indirect natural... light into the back wall of the interior to balance lighting from the north facing primary viewing wall which is composed of two sheets of salvaged laminated glass with a steel stiffening member at handrail height to allow viewers to stand comfortably at the window. The side door is heavy planks in a steel frame with pivoting hinge to allow large artwork access. The exterior of the building is clad in exterior, fiber-reinforced GWB with rain screen membrane and Gabion rock facing, which also continues out as landscape walls. The roof is low slope, single ply embrace with a living roof planted with local, drought-resistant Texas prairie grasses and flowers. #art #andersonandersonarquitecture #architecture #livingroof #culturaldistrict

@blindalleyprojects is a multi-purpose, small, vitrine-like structure conceived by artists @thorntonart61 and @camschoep, and designed in collaboration with Mark and Peter Anderson of Anderson Anderson Architecture, for the purpose of exhibiting single works or installations that respond to the conditions and context of the gallery. It is intended to address a need for discourse, gathering sites and unique alternative exhibition spaces for the DFW art community in addition to reaching a broader audience through its placement and availability within a residential area on the edge of Fort Worth’s cultural district. #art#andersonandersonarquitecture #exhibitions #cultural

The house is conceived as a tune-able instrument to facilitate comfortable and highly variable living in this shape-shifting landscape. The majority of the house consists of a repeating series of lightweight pavilions, aligned in a row beneath a broad shade roof serving also as an air deflector and rain collector. The pavilions are each enclosed by sliding barn doors on all sides, allowing flexibility in spatial configuration and fine tuning of shared community space vs. priv...acy; enclosure vs. expansiveness; continuity between exterior and interior. These primary living pavilions are serviced by a row of heavy concrete bunkers providing contrasting mass, coolness, privacy and security for cooking, bathing and storage functions, while rooting the roof wing down into the sloping ground and shielding the pavilion space from howling trade winds. Nestled among the bunkers and sliding-door pavilions are a series of shaded and open courtyard spaces, transitioning between enclosure and full exterior on the site, creating a series of micro-climatically distinct spaces tucked among the repeating modular configuration of pavilions. This home is built on the desert highlands of the Big Island, Hawaii. The owners are a multi-generational family of artists and chefs who use the spaces for life and work, client guests, dinner parties and arts events. On a dry hillside facing south with views of towering volcanoes, vast lava escarpments and the Pacific Ocean, the house parallels a wild episodic stream cascading through desert rocks whenever rain falls on cloud-capped cliffs towering high above the house to t...he north. From these cliffs, raging trade winds buffet the north face of the house, consequently bunkered low into this rising windward flank, its roof tipped up just enough to shelter indoor/outdoor courtyards. The modulating construction elements create a quiet place to live and work almost entirely outdoors, enjoying sunlight, views, pockets of stillness amidst environmental intensity. The project intent is elemental to make it possible to live comfortably indoors and out on this wild site with minimal landscape intervention and only the rawest material construction. Since limited materials and labor are available at this location, the palette of materials is selected to maximize off-site prefabrication and to incorporate natural topography in order to minimize grading and landscape reconstruction. All that comes from off-site is lightweight metal and glass..., while that from the local ground consists of the rawest possible placement of concrete and local wood, lava stone and gravel. Few plants are added to this parched landscape with its scarce water resources, but care was taken to preserve all life currently surviving here, and to structure human life and experience to be satisfied with the subtle landscape that will wind back into the house naturally over time.
