What is Better Granite or Quartz? When it comes to countertops, stain resistance, durability, and maintenance over aesthetics are by far the most important client requirements. The clear winner continues to be engineered stone or Quartz. Granite was popular for many years. However, many clients who have granite experienced its limitations. It’s weak, stains easily, and requires yearly sealing. Because is porous, it’s susceptible to mold, mildew, bacteria and E.coli. It’s not ...the most maintenance or environmentally friendly product. Quartz on the other hand is nearly indestructible, impervious to mold, mildew, bacteria and E.coli. Quartz has a completely non-porous surface. Therefore, liquids and stains won’t penetrate the surface. Quartz is much harder than granite. It has another advantage in that it won’t crack. It’s also very resistant to heat, so a hot pan won’t leave a scorch mark (excessive heat can damage quartz). As for scheduled maintenance, there isn’t any for quartz countertops! Unlike natural stone, quartz does not need sealing or waxing to protect it from stains and mildew, even on a white quartz countertop. Quartz is an extremely durable material. To clean, simply use a mild soap, such as dishwashing liquid, along with a damp sponge or soft dishcloth. Wipe and rinse. Best Water Heater With winter right around the corner, this might be a good time to think about the age and condition of your water heater. There are two types of hot water heaters:... 1) Tank water heater These can be either gas or electric. Residential units typically come in sizes ranging from 40 to 75 gallons. The two most common sizes are 40 and 50 gallons. 2)Tankless water heater These too can be either gas or electric. Residential units typically come in sizes defined in BTU’s, water flow rate, and number of fixtures. The more water fixtures you have, the higher BTU and flow rate required. Shower Renovation What is a shower renovation? A shower renovation is the complete removal of the existing shower, including fixtures, with a new shower being installed. All shower renovations are unique and rarely will any two be alike. The new shower does not need to replicate the old shower and rarely does. Folks often ask how I provide an estimate. Here is what I believe. DAD's has a simple philosophy Always be honest and up-front with the customer and never pretend a project is something that it isn't. What this means is that we never provide an estimate containing low quality, substandard, and poor performing materials, products, and installation methods. We do not provide estimates using "best case scenarios" or meaningless "allowances". In my better than 44 years of r...enovating & remodeling, I have never seen or heard of anyone actually performing a project under these circumstances. Many contractors have no problem providing you with unrealistic estimates and bait-and-switch tactics . . . only to use the Change Order process once the project is well under way to jack-up the price . . . usually way up from the initial estimate. Estimates provided by DAD's reflect projects performed over the most recent 2 years. DAD’s estimates include all materials, parts, labor, installation, and sales tax mid-range, not at the bottom. Therefore, these estimates reflect reality and what people did and are doing using high quality and durable products, materials, and people. DAD’s estimates illustrate pricing of materials and labor across economies including building code changes. Although the economic and regulatory environment in which the project will be performed is unknown, using the most recent 2 years of activity seems to be a reasonably good indicator for estimating purposes. Nobody can read someone's mind or predict the future. However, since most folks like an idea of cost before committing to a project, this is the most reasonable, realistic, and straightforward method I have found. Best of all, it’s completely open and honest. There are no surprises, tricks, gimmicks, or hidden up-charges. You know exactly what you’re paying for and how it’s going to look.
