Happy birthday to Laron Bickerstaff, CE artist since 1997! Laron creates radiant portraiture and stream-of-consciousness text-based artwork. He communicates with American Sign Language and is deeply aware of the visual characteristics of language. In his work, Laron mixes his own observations with a pop-influenced love of the brand names that populate everyday life: celebrities, stores, food and drink, and institutions. He is known for his use of bright geometric shapes to ...assemble his abstract and stylized figures and scenes. Most recently, his ASL font was used for a Black Lives Matter poster print, and his short film "Laron's Home" was just featured at The Other Film Festival! Over the past six months, the Photography Group at CE has covered an abbreviated survey of the history of photography, presented tutorials on digital camera use, and each week present the photographic work of participating artists. It was important to the teaching artists that a few photographs were printed and exist off of a digital screen, to help give the artists a sense that their photographs were works of art. CE artists have a future in the color-naming industry! Our artists lent their imaginations and sense of color to our new brand palette. The palette was designed to energize and modernize our look with a nod to our roots in the funky and free-spirited San Francisco Mission District. CE artists were asked to think about how our new colors made them feel happy, sad, tired, hungry? They were also asked if the colors sparked any memories a smell, taste, thing, place, or m...emory. Some answers were obvious, some were funny, and many were heartwarming. In true Creativity Explored fashion, the chosen names were created through a collaborative process with our artists at the center. The trends and patterns in responses revealed more than we could have hoped about CE and our values as a community. Photography is back at Creativity Explored! It was probably sometime in the 1990s when Creativity Explored's chemical darkroom was dismantled, and photography as a medium ceased to exist at the studio. This past June, five Creativity Explored Studio Artists began meeting once a week in a new online Photography Group. Each of the Creativity Explored Studio Artist Photographers selected one of their own images, and the Teaching Artists Glenn Peckman and Joe McGovern selected on...e other image to have photo enlargements printed for this one wall exhibition. It was important to the Teaching Artists that a few photographs were printed and exist off of a digital screen, to help give the Studio Artists a sense that their photographs were works of art. Local photographer and master printer Seth Dickerman visited online with the group last month and gave them a virtual tour of his photo lab, Dickerman Prints. He explained to the group how digital printing worked and what options the Studio Artists had when printing their photographs. Dickerman Prints produced the enlargements for this exhibition and generously donated the first round of test prints to the Photography Group Studio Artists. The Photography Group was among some of the first online art offerings at Creativity Explored since the studio temporarily shut down in March due to the CoViD-19 pandemic. Studio Artists needed to already own a digital camera or camera phone, have access to an email account, WiFi, or a mobile data plan, and be able to connect to online Zoom sessions to participate. Over the past six months, the Photography Group has covered an abbreviated survey of the history of photography, presented tutorials on digital camera use, and each week presents the photographic work of the Creativity Explored Studio Artist Photography Group participants. The Photography Group hopefully will expand the number of Studio Artists participating once in-person services are safe to begin early next year. When Creativity Explored does fully re-open, digital photography will be a tool available to all Studio Artists and maybe will be more formally incorporated into the Community Outing program that takes Studio Artists on field trips throughout the week. Lastly, we aspire to develop a Fine Arts Photography program at Creativity Explored in the upcoming year! Teaching artist Geralyn Montano heard that CE artist #KarlaJoannaSanchez has been going through some emotionally challenging times. Although not part of the CE art delivery team, Geralyn paid two visits to Karla without hesitation and brought her dog, Sheena, to help spread some joy to Karla. Geralyn dropped off some art supplies while Karla showed Geralyn her embroidery progress. As much as Geralyn's check-in lifted Karla's spirits, Geralyn said she very much treasured their... short time together as well. Thank you to all the dedicated teaching artists who have been checking in on CE artists individually every week and for being the main bloodline that keeps the artists connected to CE even when they are not able to be in the studio physically. You are all rockstars! We're nearing the end of 2020, and we know it hasn't been the easiest year for a lot of us. Curated by Ajit Chauhan. The show takes inspiration from Elizabeth Bishop's poem "The Monument," in which the narrator, in conversation, describes a specific but unseen monument in detail, noting the shambolic, temporal nature of its construction, while reve...aling its aspirational qualities in more anthropomorphic terms. Bishop's poem inspired the galleries to consider the notion of a monument more abstractly, and how works of art and metaphorical concepts of monuments are interconnected. Their responses yielded works that draw ingenious and often irreverent references to traditional and often problematic notions of monument, as well as works that consider the structure of a monument using imaginary terms to examine formal possibilities.
