Here’s your Saturday update on new COVID-19 cases for Anaheim and Orange County. Over the past couple days we’ve seen a moderation in new cases. But the seven day average of new daily cases as of Feb. 10 is on par with what we saw in mid-November. We still have some work to do in our fight against COVID, but we’re making great strides! Here's your summary for Feb. 20:... * Anaheim cases: 49 new cases, with four among children, for a running total of 40,630 * Anaheim deaths: six; running total of 687 * OC cases: 391 new cases, for a running total of 244,380 * OC deaths reported: 44, for a running total of 3,770 * OC tests: 17,530, for a running total of 2,950,649 * OC hospitalizations: 591, down from 636 * OC ICU: 196, down from 215 * OC ventilators available: 63 percent, up from 59 percent * OC ICU beds available: 15.1 percent, up from 14 percent More at Anaheim.net/coronavirus. As we close out another work week in this pandemic, we continue to be encouraged by the downward trends in new COVID-19 cases and hospitalization rates. If we keep this up, we could advance to the red tier in the coming weeks. Today the state announced updated guidelines for youth and adult sports. The guidelines say outdoor sports competitions like football, soccer, baseball and cheerleading can resume with modifications in counties that have case rates below 14 per 100,00...0. Orange County’s current case rate is 20.7 per 100,000 so we don’t qualify for this just yet. Our hope is that the case rate continues to drop so we can soon watch these sports make a comeback in Anaheim! Here's your summary for Feb. 19: * Anaheim cases: 58 new cases, with 15 among children, for a running total of 40,581 * Anaheim deaths: seven; running total of 681 * OC cases: 324 new cases, for a running total of 243,989 * OC deaths reported: 41, for a running total of 3,726 * OC tests: 19,987, for a running total of 2,933,119 * OC hospitalizations: 636, down from 663 * OC ICU: 215, down from 230 * OC ventilators available: 59 percent, up from 58 percent * OC ICU beds available: 14 percent, down from 14.9 percent More at Anaheim.net/coronavirus.

In the purple Tier 1, which is what we're in now here in Anaheim and Orange County, the state allows for certain outdoor sports games and practices for both youths and adults. The sports allowed are those that permit sufficient physical distancing and pose a low risk for transmission of the virus. But it's still important to keep your guard up at sports practices and games to stop the spread of coronavirus.... How do you fight COVID when playing low contact sports? Keep it clean on and off the field. Make sure you bring hand sanitizer and clean your hands frequently. Wash your hands before and after every practice or game. And avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Wear a mask. There are many athletic-style masks on the market that are more comfortable and make it a bit easier to breath while you're exercising. Even if you're mostly able to distance from others in your chosen sport, you always want to have your mask with you in case you unexpectedly run into someone. Keep your group small and consistent. Try to practice or play matches or games with the same small group. That way you can avoid interacting with too many different people and reduce the risk of spreading the virus. Bring your own equipment. Whether it's your tennis racket, Frisbee or golf clubs, having separate equipment helps you avoid touching the same surfaces as others. And be sure to wipe everything down and sanitize it after you're done. Thanks for keeping Anaheim safe and fighting COVID in all you do!

Even and perhaps especially amid the pandemic, we've not slowed down on our homeless outreach efforts here in Anaheim. In January we launched the new Community Care Response Team, enhancing and increasing our ongoing outreach with our partners at City Net. The team operates 14 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the city, and also operates a dedicated Anaheim call center for calls from the community related to homelessness.... If you know someone in need, or have a concern about a homeless situation in your neighborhood, report it at Anaheim.net/anytime or call (714) 820-9090. In a little more than a month, the team responded to more than 700 calls, made contact with more than 380 people on Anaheim's streets and helped more than 64 people get into housing or shelter. The team has also distributed COVID-19 resources such as face masks, hand sanitizer and information on where to get tested or vaccinated. The team is off to a great start, and we're encouraged to see what they'll do in month two.

Today brings another grim high in cases for Anaheim and Orange County, which both saw their largest one-day reporting totals. Anaheim saw 488 new cases as part of 2,613 countywide. The cases come on more than 15,000 tests for a 17 percent positivity rate for this batch of results. There were no deaths reported today, which is always welcome. But, sadly, deaths lag cases and are reported in batches. Only a few days ago we saw three days in a row of 15 or more deaths reported.... This is the post-Thanksgiving surge in full effect. It is a grave indicator that we cannot continue gathering and must do what's needed to stop spread. Here's your summary for Dec. 9: * Anaheim cases: 488 new cases, with 68 among children, for a running total of 15,695 since city tracking began in March * Anaheim deaths: none; running total of 353 * OC cases: 2,613 new cases, for a running total of 93,126 * OC deaths reported: none; running total of 1,633 * OC tests: 15,592 for a running total of 1,605,663 * OC hospitalizations: 974, up from 946 a day earlier * OC ICU: 239, up from 235 a day earlier * OC ICU beds available: 11.2 percent unadjusted, down from 18 percent a day earlier; 4.9 percent adjusted (note: per the state, the adjustment is based on percentage of ICU beds being used for COVID-19 patients) * OC ventilators available: 53 percent, unchanged from a day earlier * Southern California Region ICU availability: 9 percent Find full case data, testing locations and more at Anaheim.net/coronavirus.

Today we saw another sizable number of new COVID-19 cases reported in Anaheim and Orange County. Anaheim saw 54 new cases reported, while Orange County saw 335. As we continue to see high numbers, it's more important than ever that we all buckle down and do our part to stem the spread.... Today sees another sizable number of new COVID-19 cases for Anaheim and Orange County. Anaheim saw 44 new cases reported, while Orange County saw 308. Both are down from Sunday but still elevated. The cases come on more than 7,000 tests, representing a 4.3 percent positivity rate for this batch, above the county's seven-day average of 3.6 percent positivity.... At risk with continued higher numbers is moving backward in California's reopening tiers and seeing restaurants, gyms and places of worships no longer able to operate indoors. Moving backward also will make it harder to see kids back in school or to eventually reopen our theme parks and convention center, which are so critical for Anaheim's economy. Here's your summary for Nov. 9: * Anaheim cases: 44 new cases, with none among children, for a running total of 10,703 since city tracking began in March * Anaheim deaths: none; for a running total of 327 * OC cases: 308 new cases, for a running total of 62,563 * OC deaths reported: none; running total of 1,509 * OC Tests: 7,148 for a running total of 1,190,732 * OC Hospitalizations: 205, up from 201 a day earlier * OC ICU: 76, up from 72 a day earlier Find full case data, testing locations and more at Anaheim.net/coronavirus. Today we see recent highs in COVID-19 case for Anaheim and Orange County. Anaheim saw 96 new cases reported, while Orange County saw 512, both the highest since August. One mitigating factor is the cases come on a large number of tests at more than 15,000, nearly double what we saw on Saturday.... For the batch of cases reported today there is a countywide positivity rate of 3.4 percent, just below the county's seven-day average of 3.6 percent. Still, the increased spread is likely due to people gathering and letting their guard down amid cooler weather and spending more time indoors. We're all tired of coronavirus. But we must keep fighting. At risk is seeing restaurants, gyms and places of worships no longer able to operate indoors if we move backward through California's reopening tiers. Moving backward also will make it harder to see kids back in school or to eventually reopen or theme parks and convention center, which are so critical for Anaheim's economy. Here's your summary for Nov. 8: * Anaheim cases: 96 new cases, with 13 among children, for a running total of 10,659 since city tracking began in March * Anaheim deaths: none; for a running total of 327 * OC cases: 512 new cases, for a running total of 62,255 * OC deaths reported: three; running total of 1,509 * OC Tests: 15,061 for a running total of 1,183,584 * OC Hospitalizations: 201, up from 199 a day earlier * OC ICU: 72, unchanged from a day earlier Find full case data, testing locations and more at Anaheim.net/coronavirus.
