Co-Director Adam Erickson was able to go check on the camp this morning before the evacuation order became mandatory due to the #CZUAugustLightningComplex fire.... It was incredibly smokey and the sky had an orange haze to it as the sun tried to break through the smoke. All spring and summer we have had a family of deer (2 fawns, a mama, and 2 bucks) out and about, munching on the apples, unafraid of anything. But this morning, the deer weren't at camp, and not even a squirrel was to be seen. It was eerily quiet. The pictures don't do it justice, but we wanted to share a few images to try and give you a sense of what the scene was. Every surface had a fine, gray ash on it, and as the ash continued to fall, it felt an awful lot like snow flurries coming down. There were also several half-charred/singed leaves all over the property. It hasn't yet reached us, and we're not sure if it will, but these were tangible signs of what our neighbors have been dealing with. All we know is how it was when Adam left the property; we are in a waiting game. As we continue to wait for updates, we covet your prayers, for us and for everyone who is affected by this fire, as well as all the fires currently burning in California.
