A Very Merry Chamberlain’s The holidays at Chamberlain’s Youth Services are indeed a very special time of year. Brightly lit trees, festively adorned, and the drifting aroma of hot cocoa competes with the warmth of the home. In my mind now, I can see the children finding comfort, I can smell the sweetness in the air, and I feel the connection of those around me. I’m reminded of my childhood, but not for long. You see within all its cheer and joy, the yule season can also carr...y feelings of loss and isolation for a child without a family to call their own. Family and friends are foremost in my holiday memories from long ago. After all, being with family and owning an unwavering sense of belonging can be in stark contrast to a foster child’s experience. So this begs the question, what might a foster youth recall of past holidays? Will the memories be hard to find, or fleeting? Do the memories exist at all? Long ago, Chamberlain’s decided every Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Christmas Day would hold opportunities to build positive memories for the kids in treatment. Caring and connected staff take the children on holiday outings, visit cultural and faith-based activities, and decorate the homes in all you might expect for the occasion. The kids connect with community groups, they make wish lists, and they discover evidence that Santa ate the cookies while they slept. At last, they wake up Christmas morning to find that for the first time for many, Santa actually got their wish list. They build memories. The children living at Chamberlain’s have lost a lot in their lifetimes. More than most of us can imagine. And so, until a permanent family is found, Chamberlain’s staff will make the moments special. While child and care team focus on healing years of trauma, Chamberlain’s will strive to keep the spirit of belonging, hope, and love alive in their hearts. Going the extra mile to bring joy into the lives of foster youth is simply what we do. And Chamberlain’s staff, volunteers, and community of generous donors are a shining example of how it’s all made possible. The donations made to Chamberlain’s Youth Services during the 12 Days of Giving fund this commitment and we’ve been fortunate to receive that support in years past.
