Happy National Transfer Student Week. Today we would like you to meet Fabian Guzman. He is a current transfer student at UCLA. He is a proud transfer from El Camino College. What makes Fabian proud to be a transfer student? "Being a transfer student holds a certain stigma that many people outside of this community find to be negative. However, the reality is that transfer students are just as resilient and if not more prepared to graduate from four-year universities. I... am proud to be a transfer because I fight the status quo and represent a group of people who have persevered against all odds. Kevin Hale is a member of the Navajo Nation and currently works for the American Indian community at United American Indian Involvement in DTLA. Kevin is double Bruin, having earned his bachelor’s degree in Sociology in 2016 and Masters in Social Welfare in 2018, after transferring from Los Angeles Pierce College. As a Social Worker and Substance Abuse Counselor, Kevin helps people to learn to enjoy their lives again. He often speaks to community organizations and soci...al service agencies promoting health, equality, and higher education for people of color. During his time at UCLA and currently is a constant support to the CCCP team helping students of all ethnicities pursue higher education. He shares his hopes that Creator always shines blessings of peace and prosperity on your educational journey. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Denise Phelps is a nontraditional African American student and mother of seven and a community college transfer student from Long Beach Community College to UCLA in 2014 and is currently a graduate student completing her master’s degree in Public Policy. Denise’s future plans after completing my master's degree at UCI include pursuing a Ph.D. in Education and working at a UC and Community College to help other students of color to pursue their dreams in completing their education trajectory in higher education. Her goals are rooted in her determination, explaining that she has to work harder than most of her peers and sometimes being a non-traditional parenting student puts her at a disadvantage but that she pushes through all of the obstacles to preserve because no university is unreachable, no person of color is unteachable and no nontraditional student is unspeakable Didn't register by yesterday's deadline, send us a message to obtain the link. #power2thenontraditionalTransfer #power2thetransfer #transferispossible

Meet Jewel Bourne. Jewel transferred from Santa Monica College in 2013 to UCLA where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in English and Gender Studies in 2016 and a master's degree in Higher Education Administration Leadership from CSUN in 2019. Jewel serves in our office as the program coordinator for CCCP’s partnership with Los Angeles Valley College, a Sally Casanova Scholar, and a current Ph.D student and research assistant at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign. ... Jewel is a first-generation college student and daughter of immigrants whose persistence in education is rooted in her desire to serve students who come from backgrounds similar to her own. As a Sistah Scholar, Jewel’s higher education experience revolves around community, explaining that as the first in her family to graduate from community college, then to receive a bachelor's degree and a master's degree, higher education has not been easy to navigate. Many times, she didn't know the answers to the questions and situations that arose, much less what questions she had. Many times, she had to figure out what questions I had, needed to ask, and whom to ask them to. She found people who believed in, affirmed, and supported her. She credits her success in higher education to her chosen family and community building because when one of us rises, we have a responsibility to help others rise. Jewel wants to remind non-traditional students to be messy, be complicated, show up anyways. Be afraid, but do the thing, so many of us that you see doing things often are afraid and don’t have it all figured it out, despite what it looks like. #power2thenontraditionalTransfer #power2thetransfer #transferispossible

Meet Ryan Astengo. Ryan transferred from East Los Angeles College in 2018. Ryan graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor's degree in June 2020. Ryan is a non-traditional parenting student, who has overcome several challenges and people who told him he couldn’t succeed in higher education. Ryan explains his pursuit and persistence in higher education Street Gold. Street Gold represents all the brilliance, talent, knowledge, and unique individuals that come from the streets. As...ide from the representation aspects, StreetGold is his message to people that can relate to me attending an institution of higher education that had to overcome obstacles in order to be successful. StreetGold represents those that overcame adversity in order to succeed, but it also represents those that want to be successful as well. Ryan understands that education is power and that until POC are afforded the same opportunities and privileges to take up space in political and educational institutions, we will struggle for social justice and equality on every societal level and continue to fight! Ryan wants to remind non-traditional students to be the rose that grew from the concrete. Meet Dr.Heather Adams. Heather transferred from Santa Monica College in 2012 is a double Bruin. Heather graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Class of 2014 and a doctorate degree in education, June 2018. Heather is the founding director of the UCLA Transfer Center. Heather’s advocacy and desire to serve transfer students began as the founder of the UCLA Non Traditional Students Network while she was an undergraduate student. As a transfer student s...pecialist, her work and advocacy include the development of Transfer Nation, a network of folks including student, staff, and allies who are focused on all things transfer and in her new role at the College Excellence Program and the Aspen Institute. Dr. Adams describes herself as dogged, explaining that while she is unendingly enthusiastic and curious about all things transfer and non-trad (and these are intrinsic to her personality), 'dogged' best describes how she approaches her work and the philosophy behind her search for a rigorous academic career. Explaining that she was not supposed to get this far in, academically. Heather shares that she struggled in school and only realized at the age of 36 that she was dyslexic and was gonna have to work diligently to get where she wanted to in life. Dr. Adams wants to remind non-traditional students This is YOUR JOURNEY! Own the experience. Don't let anyone else tell you what your educational path is or should look like. Ask questions, use your life experience in the navigation of it, don't take no for an answer --that is the advantage we have as non-trads! It can often feel like a sea of youngins' or a college world that doesn't make room for the non-trad, shift that mindset! We have experience, skills, talents, point-of-view that matter, are valued and are ESSENTIAL to the academic community. Carry that with you whenever you walk into a classroom or across campus Didn't register by yesterday's deadline, send us a message to obtain the link. #power2thenontraditionalTransfer #power2thetransfer #transferispossible See more

Meet Romen Lopez. Romen transferred from East Los Angeles College in 2016 and is a double Bruin, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Chicanx Studies and Minor in Education, and a Masters degree in Social Welfare. Romen is a single father of three children, did not complete high school and earned his GED while incarcerated, and was the first in his family to graduate from college. During Romen’s time at UCLA, he founded Reforming Education to Diminish Incarceration, a campus ...organization that helps formerly incarcerated community college students increase their chances of admission to UCLA. His pursuit of higher education is to be a part of empowering those who feel powerless, he wants to be a part of giving a voice to the voiceless understanding that it can change a life because it changed his. Explaining that it took a village to get him to UCLA and he wants to continue helping other formerly incarcerated students to reach and achieve their goals in higher education. Romen wants to remind nontraditional students that he never expected that he would attend UCLA and that it is a testament, that we should NEVER take NO for an answer. #power2thenontraditionalTransfer #power2thetransfer #transferispossible See more
