Another endorsement written for Berkeley City Council to renew our lease: I first started working in the Cazadero dining room as a BHS student 50 years ago. It was my first job and I learned so much about music, good work habits and how to cultivate friendships that would last a lifetime. Fast forward to the 1990’s when I joined the first Board of Directors formed to re-open Cazadero Performing Arts Camp after the property had undergone years of decay and neglect. I spent m...any hours at camp work weekends helping to get everything ready for the newest batch of young musicians to arrive. And the camp has thrived again ever since. So it was easy when I retired from school administration 6 years ago to join the camp office as a weekly volunteer. Reading annual surveys from campers and speaking with parent donors has reinforced my appreciation for the profound effect Caz continues to have on the development of our young people. Their passion for music develops under the guidance of music teachers and expert conductors who give their heart and souls to the camp experience. It is truly a gem for the City of Berkeley’s arts program! Cathy Read them all at www.cazadero.org/advocacy

22 public comments at the Berkeley City Council meeting last night, plus many letters to Council - all glowing endorsements of Caz! Thank you to everyone who spoke up in support of our lease renewal! I can't wait to share these endorsements with you over the coming weeks. First, I'll share one from a dear friend from Cazadero Performing Arts Family Camp: Cazadero Music Camp changed my life and continues to enrich the lives of thousands of local children and their families. N...ot only did I grow up in Berkeley (I’m very proud of that) but I grew up going to Caz as well. I first went to Caz Family Camp when I was less than a year old. My late mother, Rosemary Richie was on staff at family camp and ran the under 6 year olds program. It was a time every year for our family to unplug and spend time together making music and art under the redwoods. When I was old enough to go to youth music camp, I eagerly went and ended up being in the same cabin with young musicians that are still my good friends until today. Youth camp, hand-in-hand with the BUSD music program gave me the skills to play in the BHS Jazz Band and travel the world performing in Berkeley High’s name. This helped inform my world view as an artist and along with Caz gave me the confidence to have a career as a professional artist. And now an educator myself, I enjoy camp every summer with my own two children (third on the way) and my partner Whitney Pollack. Some of my fondest memories of my late mother are from Caz. I am so thankful and impressed with the work Caz Music Camp has done over the many years and look forward to many more. My whole family (that live in Berkeley) thanks them for making it possible for thousands of children to discover the love of performing arts every year and begin their journey as artists.
